Todd Stroger stands by sales tax increase

Southtown:
Cook County Board President Todd Stroger on Monday stood by his controversial sales tax increase by vetoing legislation to repeal it.

The move touches off what promises to be a weeklong battle, with county commissioners in support of the tax rollback trying to collect the 14 votes needed to override the veto.

Stroger said on WVON-AM (1690) on Monday afternoon that he thinks the veto will stand, and he argued that rolling back the tax hike would push the county into the red.

"Two years ago, we had a deficit of $238 million. If we ... get rid of the sales tax now, we have determined we'll have a deficit of $245 million next year," Stroger said on "The Cliff Kelley Show."

Through a spokesman, Stroger declined interviews, saying he would talk at length during a news conference today.
This was in fact big news at the County yesterday!
