City Council to re-open Wal-Mart debate

Clout St:
Ald. Richard Mell (33rd) said [Friday] he plans to set a date for a public hearing this month on a measure to allow the city’s second Wal-Mart store on the South Side.

“We’ll see what the consensus is,” said Mell, who controls the proposal’s destiny as chairman of the council’s Rules Committee.
...

Mayor Richard Daley could clear the way for that project by ordering his planning commissioner to sign off. But he has been unwilling to reignite the feud with labor unions that oppose the non-union retailer.

In April, Brookins introduced an ordinance that would remove the need for the planning commissioner’s support of a Wal-Mart store at the site. On Friday, Brookins said, “I’m optimistic. There are still a bunch of [aldermen] sitting on the fence.”

Although Daley said he wants more Wal-Mart stores in Chicago, he previously said Brookins’ plan does not have enough support in the council due to union opposition.
Is something about to happen soon on this?
