All,
We are launching a campaign called Stellar Students.

Please send me a photo and descriptive paragraph on your kids/relatives/friends/friends kids,
who are doing great things in school, home, church, athletics and/or in their communities.
List any and all accomplishments, awards and honors.

BTW- there is no limit on the number of Stellar Students you recommend.
The only requirement is that they be "Stellar"...

Chatham Business Association Awards dinner -- NOT in Chatham?!

Saw this sign for the Chatham Business Association's annual awards gala, to be held on September 17, 2010 at the Hyatt Regency downtown.

Why isn't it being held at some place such as Captain Hard Times Dining? It's a perfect place for an awards banquet (or a wedding reception, or other special events)

Seems kind of strange that an organization that is supposed to promote business in the neighborhood is taking it (necessarily?) out of the neighborhood, no?

Unless there isn't capacity in our neighborhood, why not have it here?

Now, if there are so many attendees that it might not be practical to have it at Captain's. But if the only issue might be parking, perhaps they could provide complimentary valet service (using places such as Ruggles School and local businesses).

Let's hope other community leaders continue to use the meeting rooms of businesses such as Army & Lou's and Chatham Pancake House.

The 6th Ward Service Awards Luncheon

This year’s Service Awards Luncheon was a wonderful event. We honored some our 6th Ward community leaders and activists as well as business people and clergy. We are privileged to have many dedicated people in the Ward and wish we could have recognized more people. The 2009 award recipients are Evelina Robertson (Chesterfield Community Council), Christine Cook (Chatham Avalon Park Community Council), Clevan Tucker, Jr. (Roseland Heights Community Assoc.), Darlene Tribue (President, Park Manor Neighbors Community Org.), Milton Moses (CEO, Community Insurance Center, Inc.), Michael LaFargue (West Chesterfield Community Org.), Lou Gikas (Owner, L & P Foods), and Father Matt Eyerman (Pastor, St. Columbanus Church and School). Congratulations to all of the Honorees.

Holding the plaque here in the middle of Harris & Ald. Lyle is Christine Cook who was an honoree from the Chatham Avalon Park Community Council.

In the middle of Harris & Ald. Lyle is Milton Moses who is the CEO of the Community Insurance Center, Inc. His business has a link under local businesses in the sidebar.

Gary Comer Youth Center featured in the Trib

From Yesterday's (Jan. 8) Chicago Tribune, Skyline section...

This center, in Grand Crossing, has won some arthitecture awards. The center was built by donations from the founder of Land's End, who actually grew up in the area. Students from nearby Paul Revere school, and the South Shore Drill Team, are among the many groups served by this center.

I have actually been inside, and it's a fantastic addition to the community. Many communities, even downtown, would be envious if they knew it existed.
