This is the article to read if you want to know more about the state tests that students are expected to take to measure their academic progress.More than 65 percent of Chicago third- through eighth-graders passed their Illinois Standards Achievement Tests this year, new figures show. That's a record overall high for Chicago, and it's at least the seventh straight year of improvement on that measuring stick, according to Chicago school officials.
The improved results come after some angry immigrant parents threatened to keep their kids home on test day, and school officials in Chicago and several districts statewide said the state was unfairly requiring some kids who were still learning English to take this year's ISATs. Many officials predicted more schools would face sanctions because of the added kids tested.
This year's combined Chicago Public Schools' pass rate in all reading, math and science tests taken in April was up 1.3 percentage points from last year's 64.1 percent rate, district figures show.
If roughly 20,000 CPS students who traditionally would have taken a different test were excluded from this year's ISAT count, the overall pass rate increase would be more than twice as much, with 67.8 percent passing, according to the preliminary numbers provided by CPS.
For the first time, kids with five years or less of bilingual-education classes were required to take the ISATs this year. That was thanks to a decision by federal authorities that the alternative test these students took in the past was inadequate, CPS officials said.
