Stunned by opposition from the police union, CTA President Ron Huberman on Friday abandoned his effort to hang onto his police pension on grounds that part of his $198,000-a-year job revolves around security.
Huberman said he pulled his controversial petition to the Policemen's Annuity and Benefit Fund of Chicago after picking up the Chicago Sun-Times and reading about efforts by the Fraternal Order of Police to block his request.
"When I applied for this, I didn't believe it would be, in any way, controversial," Huberman said. "I followed the process exactly as laid out in the law. That being said, clearly there were some individuals who believed this was controversial."
FOP President Mark Donahue said Huberman's decision was "the right thing to do. ... The law does not entitle him to the extensive service credit that he was seeking."
