Weis proposes CPD makeover

Sun-Times:
The Chicago Police Department is proposing a major makeover at a time when murder and other crimes are rising.

Police Supt. Jody Weis, who took office early this year, wants to create two assistant superintendents who answer directly to him. One would be in charge of administration and the other would run the department’s operations.
The current first deputy superintendent — who has traditionally run the department from day to day — would become the assistant superintendent of operations.

In another major change, the department would eliminate the Bureau of Strategic Deployment, which oversees the Targeted Response Unit, public transportation, the airports, the marine unit and the new Mobile Strike Force.

Those units would be shifted to other bureaus.

Authorities said they expect to save an undetermined amount of money on the administrative costs of running the Bureau of Strategic Deployment, which was created by Weis’ predecessor, Phil Cline.

This morning, Weis refused to answer questions about the restructuring.

“I’m not going to talk now,” he said. “Let’s let the mayor make his proposal and then we will address that down the road.”
