1974: Jewel-Osco Grand Bazaar 87th & Dan Ryan

We were alerted to this photo of our neighborhood Jewel-Osco store as it had appeared back in 1974 from a representative for Jewel-Osco.
Long-time southside residents may recall this JEWEL-OSCO Grand Bazaar (photo above) that was located at the Dan Ryan Expressway and 87th Street, as shown in a 1974 photo. Today, a more modern JEWEL-OSCO is located at the same location. While OSCO Drug formerly had its own freestanding stores, in the early 1960s, the company began to open combined grocery and pharmacy stores under one roof, a novel idea at the time.

2012 marks the 75th anniversary of OSCO Drug, and today there are 173 JEWEL-OSCO Pharmacies located across the Chicago area, and elsewhere in Illinois, Iowa and Northwest Indiana. Current and former OSCO Drug employees recently attended a special event held in the Chicago area to celebrate the milestone.
The photo credit was given to Dave Alford of the Pleasant Family Shopping blog. You can find the picture above in this post!
