Woodlawn is back in Curbed Cup finals...

In yesterday's poll over at Curbed Chicago - the tweet you see below - they edged out the hipster enclave on the northwest side of Logan Square. Woodlawn is one step closer to repeated at the Curbed Chicago neighborhood of the year.
Meanwhile the other final four contest is between the South Loop & Uptown. So far there doesn't appear to be a winner as I write this post. Though I like the idea of a Woodlawn vs. Uptown Curbed Cup. Time will tell on that.
I'm sure JP Paulus would like to amp up the trash talk with our friends over at Uptown Update who I'm sure are on the edge of their seats waiting for their results. If Uptown gets into the finals again there will be a rematch from last year with Woodlawn and bear in mind Uptown already won two Curbed Cups.

Pullman in Curbed Cup Final Four!!!

Via The Chicago Neighborhoods
It's the end of the year and Curbed Chicago has their annual Curbed Cup. In the final four and the neighborhoods of Pullman, Uptown, Lakeview, and the Loop.

Unfortunately I missed the start of this neighborhood competition that pits up-and-coming neighborhoods of Chicago against each other. This is how Pullman is described:
The Pullman neighborhood on the far South Side had a very big year. The area, which is known and named for its connection to the Pullman Palace Car company, was designated as a National Monument by President Obama in February. Then in April, the soap maker Method opened its $30 million eco-conscious factory in the neighborhood. Pullman gained a lot of momentum this year, and the neighborhood doesn't appear to letting down anytime soon. When we called for Curbed Cup nominations, Pullman residents came out in droves to make sure that their voice was heard.
So far Pullman has edged out Bridgeport and the West Loop neighborhoods can they edge out the north side community of Uptown?

Vote here now and hopefully by tomorrow we'll know whether or not Pullman moves onto the final and hopefully a wonderful 2016 for that historic far south side community.

BTW, I wonder if our friends up there at Uptown Update are following this -  and they are.

Intersection between the 46th and 6th wards

Uptown Update is a little upset that they get more news about what's going on with TIFs in the 46th thru our Alderman's Oct. 2009 newsletter!

BTW, here is this month's Aldermanic newsletter from Ald. Freddrenna Lyle.

Do people from the North Side have an accurate view of us?

There’ some talk by bloggers in Uptown, and the comments mentioned our own area (79th & Vincennes). Look in the comments for one by UptownPits.

The area they are talking about is called Wilson Yards. More than 10 years ago, the “Wilson Yards”, former (as in decades ago) end-of-line & repair garage for the CTA burned down leaving a 5 acre parcel of land available – the largest such open space on the North Side. A TIF was developed to reconstruct the area. The problem is, the community has 2 loud camps (not including those in the middle): those who advocate for low income housing, and those who was to ** Uptown. The original plans called for demolition of an existing storefront building (which have since relocated across the street) & and Aldi (to be replaced by a new building), a new parking structure, Target, Movie Theaters, smaller stores, and 2 buildings of mixed income housing. This complex is right off of the Wilson Red Line El Stop, not too far from the Lake and even Wrigley Field.
The current situation is this:

  • Aldi has been the only thing built, and has been functions

  • Target has JUST gotten everything approved (i.e. internally) to officially build, and made an announcement that made the Chicago news circuit.

  • The Movie theater was dropped (to be built somewhere nearby)

  • The housing, now beginning construction. Opponents have likened it to Cabrini Green . The reality is it is more like 2 existing buildings in the neighborhood on Sheridan Road. 4645 houses seniors, and 4640 has lower income families (including many African & Caribbean immigrants). However, the Wilson Yards buildings are FAR SMALLER than the Sheridan Road buildings. And they will NOT be like Cabrini Green.

South Siders – how “true” do you think his/her assertions about travel, etc. are? Is it bad for housing to be built for lower income seniors & families to be built next to the El? How similar – or better or worse—would it be for something similar hear in the 6th ward or nearby?
You can weigh in over there, but expect to be attacked if you aren’t supporting their point of view.

If you post here on thesixthward, we just ask that you be respectful, and try to understand “the other side”.
