Are we losing our Christmas spirit?

So are our neighborhoods losing our Christmas spirit?

So for example, on my block, we have a tradition of the light posts alternating red and green lights. But in 2015, it's literally the middle of December, and only 9 homes have changed their lights.

I have also noticed that the 8700 block of Calumet, which used to have each household have some kind of light display, is also lacking this year.

How are things in your neighborhood? And have you noticed the difference?

But as a reminder, Williams Hydroplants is selling fresh live trees. Please support our local business. Read more from our previous post on William Hydroplants.

From that post:

Their store is at 311 E. 79th Street Chicago, IL 60619. They will sell the Christmas Trees in their lot across the street at 79th & Prairie, also across the street from the south playground of Ruggles elementary school. Their phone number is (773) 651-3426, so can call ahead and schedule your pickup.

Also, if you have other needs, please contact them.  They can have items such as salt and snow melt ready for you out there as well.

Let them know JP Paulus (dad of Mia and Faith) sent you. It won't result in any discount. But it would be great to know connections have been made

Christmas tress onsale starting TOMORROW at Williams Hydro Plants.

We wrote about Williams Hydro Plants 2 years ago. We wanted to let you know they are selling Christmas Trees again, in their lot on the NorthWest corner of 79th & Prairie (across from Ruggles School's main playground). Sales start tomorrow, and hours are later (going into the 7pm hour).

Support our local small businesses!

Here's what we said then:

Worlee did a great job on an article about Charles and Belinda Williams of Williams Hydro-Plants a short time ago.

I can personally testify to how friendly and helpful they are.  They have also become their unofficial granchildren. (see the photo of the girls with Mr. Williams),

The Williams are selling Christmas Trees starting Saturday, December 1.  They will be doing so through the evening (past their closing time of 5pm).  We encourage you to buy from them if you use real trees.

Spotlight on Local Business: Williams Hydro Plants

We were recently asked to write a blog post on a local business selected by Local  First Chicago and Chicago Black Business Network. Local First Chicago is a  network of locally owned, independent
businesses and community organizations joined together to keep money and character in our neighborhoods

and build a thriving local living economy. In doing so,

they hope to promote the overall social, economic,

and  environmental health of our economy and

communities and Chicago Black Business Network

(CBBN) exists to initiate a grassroots business-to-business service designed to assist the individual business

owner in his/her efforts to reach the next level of service and growth in the market place.

While they had a business in mind we also made recommendations, the purpose was to highlight general interest businesses that typically do not get TV/Radio exposure. Our recommendation was selected which was submitted by JP.

Here is the blog post on the Local First Site.

Williams Hydro Plants has been a fixture on 79th Street for the last 35 years. Owner Charles Williams has long had a passion for gardening and landscaping. He believed there would be no better place to start his new business than in the same neighborhood where he and his family lived. So in October of 1977, Charles and his wife Belinda opened Williams Hydro Plants in the Chatham community, of the South Side of Chicago.
The store offers the novice, weekend warrior and professional gardener a large selection of fertilizers, starter plants, house plants, fruit and vegetable seeds and sod. Residents in the Chatham community take great pride in their lawns, and the William’s offer a variety of grass seed and accessories to keep those lawns looking green and luscious.
Have a brown thumb? Don’t have time to do it yourself?  Have the most embarrassing yard on the block? Let Williams Hydro Plants design and complete a professional landscaped yard with plants, shrubbery and grass.
Where does the Hydroplant come into play? The store offers a full line of hydroponic gardening equipment and supplies. Hydroponic gardening is a method of growing plants using mineral nutrient solutions in water, without soil. Hydroponic gardening has recently become popular as a number of grocery stores are now offering hydroponically grown produce, and when the First Lady, Michelle Obama, began endorsing this method of gardening. At Williams Hydro Plants, gardening isn’t just for spring and summer but is a year-round hobby. For the holiday season, Charles offers a Christmas tree yard with trees of all sizes and varieties, as well as, holiday poinsettias and cacti.
If you have a question about indoor or outdoor plants, what types of sod to use or if you are looking to get into hydroponics, stop by Williams Hydro Plants and Charles and Belinda will be more than happy to assist you!
