Lieutenant Governor Pat Quinn wants the Illinois Senate to reject automatic pay hikes for lawmakers and top government officials during this week's special session. The rules seem a little weird despite the best efforts of the state house to reject them, the state senate doesn't have to vote on them and they still take effect! I'm sure people out there watching state government will say that at this moment the state government hasn't earned their raises. Still it still seems too easy!
Quinn announced Sunday that he has created www.nopayraise.org to give citizens the option of signing an online petition urging the Illinois Senate to block the raises this week or send protest e-mail to Gov. Rod Blagojevich and Senate President Emil Jones (D- Chicago), who supports the raises.
In May, the House rejected pay raises. The Senate has yet to vote and if the body doesn't by Wednesday, the pay raises will automatically take effect.
Those benefitting would include the governor, lawmakers and other top officials like the attorney general and judges.
BTW, Quinn benefits too believe it or not and says that if these raises come into effect, he will donate it to charity.
