Community college funding cuts hurt

I wonder if the City Colleges have a funding crunch:
If state funding of Illinois community colleges continues to fall short, communities will suffer.
That was the tone of a public hearing Monday at which a handful of local community college officials said they are having to rely more on local tax dollars and student tuition as a means of support.
Suzanne Morris, a member of the Illinois Community College Board, which is gathering testimony across the state about how community colleges are being affected by flat or decreased state aid, said tuition across the state is up 31 percent over the past five years.
"With less and less state funds available, the colleges, as you know, have no choice but to go to their student for the money they need to run the schools and in most cases they are least able to pay, so that is one of the troubling trends we are seeing," Morris said.
When I first looked into going to a City College, it used to cost $47.50 per credit hour. These days it's up to $72 per credit hour.
