A University of Illinois index of the state economy improved slightly in August, though the economist who compiles the measure warned “unpleasant financial surprises may still lay ahead.”
The index of state corporate, personal and sales tax receipts ticked up a percent point to 102.3 percent from July to August. Any figure above 100 indicates the state economy is growing, but it was the first increase since February.
