Since August, the state treasurer's office has added 58,000 new names to the list of people who have unclaimed property. These residents are owed more than $70 million in unclaimed property.Visit the internet home of the IL state Treasuruer @ http://www.treasurer.il.gov/.
Unclaimed property can consist of money from inactive savings and checking accounts, investments, insurance policies, or items left in safety deposit boxes. The property is turned over to the treasurer's office when the owner cannot be located for five or more years. The program, referred to as Cash Dash, can provide a return of $100 or $1.2 million (the highest claim thus far). The average claim is $200.
Last year, the state returned $75 million to almost 42,000 Illinois residents and businesses.
