Chicago-area household electric bills will fall significantly beginning in June.
The new price of $33.23 per megawatt-hour applies to nearly one-third of the power used by Commonwealth Edison Co. customers. The new price is about half the cost now paid by households and small businesses.
The Illinois Power Agency, the new state agency that buys electricity on behalf of utility customers, this week completed its first-ever procurement for ComEd customers. The one- and two-year contracts with 10 power generators and suppliers, worth a collective $588 million, are effective beginning June 1.
The rest of the power consumed by ComEd customers is priced according to previous contracts.
