Swine flu tally growing in Illinois, Chicago

Sun-Times:
Illinois had about 41 probable cases -- including 16 from Chicago and 11 from other parts of Cook County -- of swine flu by Thursday evening, state health officials said.
...
A probable case is one in which a specimen has tested positive for influenza A and confirmation is awaited from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Illinois cases have been mild compared with the strain that may have killed more than 100 people in Mexico, said Melaney Arnold, spokeswoman for the Illinois Department of Public Health.

The state is distributing drugs and supplies from the federal Strategic National Stockpile. Shipments include more than 376,000 courses of Tamiflu and Relenza. Illinois already had 650,000 courses of the drugs -- which reduce the duration of illness about one day -- in its stockpile. Masks, gloves and surgical gowns to protect health-care workers in contact with infected patients also are being distributed around the state.
