Tribune endorses Cassandra Goodrum Burton...

Well this link provided endorsements for the first 10 wards of the city council:
6th Ward: All but two of the public schools in this ward are on probation. Foreclosure rates are high. U.S. Rep. Bobby Rush even threatened to move his congressional office elsewhere because of violent crime in the area. The ward needs a leader who is committed to reducing violence, pushing for education reform and bringing jobs and economic development. Ald. Freddrenna M. Lyle hasn't provided that strong leadership. Business groups say she at least listens to them on some issues now, but this ward could do better. This may be a race between Lyle and Roderick Sawyer, son of the late mayor Eugene Sawyer. But the strongest candidate is Cassandra Goodrum Burton, a former assistant state's attorney who specializes in family and juvenile justice issues in private practice. She was head of the local school council for McDade Classical School. She's firmly committed to development. "If you have people not working at all," she told us, "any job is better than none." She wants to work with Chicago State University to turn the college into the ward's economic engine, much like UIC has been for the Near West Side. Goodrum-Burton is endorsed. There are three other candidates.

  1. Interesting endorsement seeing she blew off their interview. It will put her in the minds of voters.

  2. I am interested in what this endorsement may mean. Cassandra Goodrum Burton seems to be making a name for herself. I am still undecided about my vote but I am impressed that she gained the endorsement. If she missed the first interview and still got the endorsement then I think she was simply the most impressive.

  3. They qualified their endorsemet by stating she was not a top contender. As far as impressive, in the real world an Alderman can't take two weeks and respond by mail to media and constituent inquiries. We have some serious issues and the Alderman will not be able to duck out of being placed on the hotseat.

  4. They qualified her as the strongest candidate meaning that while people may be focused on Lyle and Sawyer Goodrum-Burton is the one who will actually do something as alderman and will make a difference. The article even went as far as to say that the ward needed change and Goodrum-Burton is the one who can bring it while Lyle, Sawyer, or the other three that were not named can not. In the real world someone who is willing to fight to get their name out and isn't relying on their father's name recognition or being the incumbent is strong enough to be on the hotseat without breaking a sweat.

  5. Well it appears that you are a Burton supporter. So why doesn't your candidate file her State Board of Election disclosures? So we need to change to a candidate who doesn't want to follow the rules? Also, the other three candidates didn't participate and I think that two of those are just as qualified as she is. I now see why they didn't bother.

BTW, the Tribune endorsed Karin Norrington Reaves in the last election and she finished a distant third. So the endorsement doesn't hold a lot of weight.

I shouldn't be surprised because the Tribune has never written positively about Chatham or the 6th ward.

  6. Endorsements may not mean a lot to you. Before entering this conversation I was undecided but now I have decided that I do support Goodrum Burton which you clearly do not. Regardless of what you think about endorsements the Tribune is one of the largest and most trusted papers in the city and has influence. Times have changed in the few years and this election is very different from the one four years ago and anything can happen.

  8. Samantha, is your support for Ms. Goodrum Burton about this endorsement? Were you already leaning towards her before you made your choice?

William, why should Ald. Lyle be removed?

  9. Prior to the endorsement I was undecided about who to support actually. I had heard some good thinks about candidate Goodrum Burton.
