Minimum wage rises to $7.75

Sun-Times:

Minimum-wage workers in Illinois are getting a 25-cent boost in pay, to $7.75 an hour.

The raise, which took effect Tuesday, is the second in a four-step wage increase. The hourly wage will increase to $8 next July and $8.25 in July 2010.

Tuesday's increase adds $520 a year for 650,000 workers, for an annual income of $16,120. A family of two is considered to be living in poverty if its income is $13,200 a year.

The federal minimum wage is $5.85; it will increase to $6.55 on July 24 and $7.25 next July.

Workers who don't receive the minimum wage or who have questions can call the Illinois Department of Labor at (800) 478-3998.
