A South Side restaurant known as the city's "premier soul food restaurant" was shut down Tuesday after inspectors discovered a rodent infestation and other critical health code violations.I enjoy Soul Queen but I'll have to admit that this is bad. And apparently according to the Tribune they were shut down in 2002.
Soul Queen Restaurant at 9031 S. Stony Island was shut down after Chicago Department of Public Health inspectors found numerous mouse feces throughout the kitchen, dining room and storage areas, according to a release from the department.
The restaurant was also cited for storing food at unsafe temperatures in a faulty walk-in cooler --- resulting in an order to discard six dozen eggs and 30 pounds of raw chicken.
Soul Queen also was cited for a leaky automatic dishwashing machine, raw sewage coming up through a floor drain near its hand-washing sink, grease oozing from the grease trap under a three-compartment sink, having no certified food manager on duty, an outside garbage dumpster overflowing with trash, and an outside grease box encrusted with grease, the release said.
Tuesday's inspection was triggered by a customer who called 311 to report seeing three live mice in the restaurant. No live mice were observed during Tuesday's inspection, the release said.
When I saw the other things Soul Queen was cited for (a leak automatic dishwashing machine or a certified food manager, I thought about this video. Of course that is not to say that a restaurant shouldn't stay clean. Being clean ought to be rule #1!
