South Siders raise Olympics concerns

Crain's Greg Hinz:
Even as Mayor Richard M. Daley pushes Chicago’s Olympic hopes in Beijing, the first signs of potential serious domestic woes for the city’s Olympics ambitions emerged back home in Chicago on Thursday.

A group of about 100 South Side civic activists and community leaders rallied in front of Michael Reese Hospital — a likely site for the 2016 Olympic Village — to demand that the city legally commit itself to protect neighborhood residents from any Olympics fallout.

Specifically, according to a statement, the group wants a written document signed by the appropriate officials establishing “minimum levels of affordable housing and employment opportunities that must remain in areas adjacent to planned Olympic facilities.”

Many of the proposed venues being considered for the 2016 Chicago Olympics would be located in some of the city’s poorest neighborhoods, with a swimming complex on the West Side and a temporary stadium for opening ceremonies and track events in Washington Park on the South Side.
Something worth your time if you're pondering Chicago's bid for the 2016 Olympics.
