After his address, [2016 Olympic bid leader Patrick] Ryan took questions that had been submitted in writing. The second question came from Meeks (D-Chicago), who is the pastor at Salem Baptist Church: "How can we have a world-class city and second-class schools, and what is the 2016 Committee going to do about changing the funding formula for public education in the state of Illinois?"On the Capitol Fax yesterday this was seen by Rich Miller as a tactic right out of the book of Saul Alinsky and if you don't know who that is he is considered a "father of community organizing".
Ryan declined to comment on the funding formula, saying it is not his field of expertise. But he noted the pursuit of the Olympics has led to the formation of World Sport Chicago, an organization that fosters youth athletics.
"If you introduce [young people] to sport, they are likely to be more healthy, they are likely to be committed to school because they want to play in a sport at the school," he said. "And we'll get them involved in Olympic sport, and there is private funding to do that."
