Prosecutor candidates debate patronage, budget cuts

Clout St.:
Republican Tony Peraica, a Cook County commissioner, said many attorneys get jobs in the prosecutor's office because of family connections.

Democrat Anita Alvarez, a veteran prosecutor under retiring State's Attorney Richard Devine, said she was insulted by the suggestion of patronage problems in the office.

Alvarez said if Peraica wants to do good for the office, he should stay on the Cook County Board and "be our friend on the board, that's where he belongs."
...
Peraica also accused Alvarez of being a silent insider in an office that has been dogged by accusations of injustice. Alvarez pointed to her surprise win against a field of politically connected challengers in the March Democratic primary as evidence of her independence. She said she's spent most of her career in courtrooms.
The debate sponsored by the Union League Club of Chicago today!
