Chicago aldermen are calling public transit officials in Thursday and they may grill them about potential fare increases despite a recent sales tax increase meant to improve their bottom line.In this same post there is a mention of another meeting. This time of the City Council budget committee about contracts for minority and women owned firms.
CTA President Ron Huberman and top officials from the Regional Transportation Authority, Metra and Pace are expected to testify about the state of mass transit in the Chicago area at City Hall hearing.
The head of the City Council's Transportation Committee, Ald. Thomas Allen (38th), said the time is ripe for a full discussion of the issues because gas prices are up, resulting in an increase in public transit riders at a time when the CTA and other agencies face serious financial problems.
"Five years ago, we would have been begging for commuters," Allen said. "Now that we have them, is there a plan for retaining them? I think we need to know what the plans are."
The meeting will start at 9:30 a.m. in the City Council chambers on the 2nd floor of City Hall, 121 N. LaSalle St.
