Alderman: 311 paperwork, bogus calls slowing pothole fixes

Sun-Times:
Chicago's 311 non-emergency system was designed to take the strain off 911 while speeding response to city service requests.

But City Council Transportation Committee Chairman Tom Allen (38th) says the award-winning system is doing just the opposite: It's slowing down the process because half of the calls turn out to be bogus, and workers waste time generating paperwork used to measure the productivity of city crews.

Allen leveled the charge during a City Council hearing Thursday called to air aldermanic gripes about an avalanche of potholes and sewer cave-ins.

"There's no corroboration -- no reliability or verification of any of these complaints. Yet, we're chasing 'em and making pie charts and graphs and all kinds of gibberish to prove their productivity," Allen said.
Has anyone had any problems getting their potholes fixed? Is it taking too long for the city to take care of them?
