Illinois’ Medicaid program saved more than $100 million last year by helping patients better manage chronic diseases like diabetes and asthma, state health officials said Monday.
The announcement comes amid to rein in spending on Medicaid, the joint federal-state health plan for the poor and disabled.
More than 220,000 Illinois Medicaid recipients are enrolled in the disease-management programs, which were created in 2007. The state spent $104 million less than it would have otherwise in fiscal 2008, ended June 30, by helping people avoid emergency room visits or hospitalizations, officials said.
