Stroger wants to borrow $256M for new equipment

Clout St:
Cook County Board President Todd Stroger wants to borrow $256 million to buy and lease new equipment, a request expected to trigger hours of debate today as commissioners evaluate each and every item the Stroger administration wants to buy.

“We need to scrutinize these requests and determine which are absolute public safety needs and emergencies, and we ought to only fund those,” said Commissioner Larry Suffredin (D-Evanston), whose staff is evaluating each of the 515 items on Stroger’s list.

Stroger spokesman James Ramos declined to comment on the borrowing plan. The hearing comes as Stroger and county commissioners are feuding over Tuesday's vote to repeal last year's 1-percentage-point sales tax increase.

The money would be used to buy and lease computer equipment, and purchase software, telecommunications equipment, cars and furniture.

Many commissioners question whether the county should borrow long-term to buy shorter-term items like cars and software.
It's bad enough that he's threatening to not only veto an attempt to repeal the county sales tax, but if it does go thru to cut services instead of cutting some bloat.
