Ald. Lyle on Chicago Tonight

Ald. Lyle joined Ald Howard Brookins , Rev. Leon Finney (of Metropoltan Apostolic Community Church and The Woodlawn Organization) and one other guest on WTTW's Chicago Tonight, with Carol Marin moderating.

Ald. Brookins of course supported the Wal-Mart, while Ald. Lyle spoke out against it.

Chicago Tonight repeats tonight on channel 11 (WTTW) at Midnight & Tuesday at 5am, and may be available On Demand (such as through Comcast).

Or you can watch it here! ;) - Levois

If you live in the 6th ward...are you for or against the Wal-Mart. And either way, what is your age?

  1. I thought that Lyle made some good points against Wal-Mart, when Brookins and Finney would let her get a word in. While I appreciate the arguments that Brookins and Finney were making in favor of the jobs Wal-Mart would provide, they showed an absolute disregard for the many independent businesses that would probably be wiped out by Wal-Mart.

Brookins and Finney mentioned Evergreen Park and its big box stores. These may provide some jobs and cheap goods, but with many hidden costs, such as energy consumption and environmental damage.

Ramirez (representing labor in the discussion) was making the point that these are not living wage jobs, but he barely got a word in at all.

I think that the businesses Ald. Lyle is trying to protect and the small business model promoted by Chicago Urban League's Project Next represent a better direction to follow. Neighborhood business districts within walking or biking distance of people's home are a more sustainable model.

  2. So then why did Ald. Lyle support the Target store on 87th St.in her ward? If Walmart is so evil, why did she vote to allow a Walmart in Ald. Mitts ward on the west side? Where were her concerns about small businesses and traffic then? She boasts of the Target store on her website, says it was a great thing for business in her ward, but wants to deny the same benefit to a neighboring ward. She never gives an example of any of the small businesses that would be threatened by walmart (there are hardly any in the immediate vicinity of this location), and the expreience with the west side Walmart contradicts her. Walmart reportedly pays $11 - 12 an hour, which is as good or better than Target, Jewel, MacD's, Walgreens and the others. They would build a green building in Chatham and they are an industry leader in environmental causes like efficient lightbulbs and energy conservation. Seems like Lyle just has a personal issue with Ald. Brookins and the 21st Ward -- it sure isn't principle or policy. Trob74
