Chatham to be designated a Special Service Area

This article was from the August 11th edition of The Citizen. If approved by the city council and the state legislature this district could be created by January 2011. According to this article 40 other areas have been designated as a Special Service Area (SSA).

Do you want to know more about SSAs? Here is a page from the City of Chicago.

Do you think an SSA would be beneficial to the Chatham neighborhood? Surely there are other neighborhoods with an SSA to point to as an example.

  1. The SSA or Special Service Area is currently drawn to include Cottage, 71st, 75th, & some part of 79th. As drawn it would cover both Park Manor's and Chatham's business areas. The SSA would tax the property owners within the District .01%. Every effort was made in the drawing to exclude as much residential property as possible. The money generated would be placed into an account to be used for the development, maintenance and upgrading of that District as determined by the SSA Board.

For years residents have complained about the trash, poor snow removal, lack of uniformity among storefronts, lack of seasonal decorations, etc., etc. The SSA can alleviate those conditions and provide some assistance for small businesses. We have been working on the SSA designation for several years and are excited about acquiring yet another development tool for our business corridors. A nearby example of how the SSA can benefit a community is the West 79th St. SSA in the 17th Ward.

Planning will be at the September 9th Ward meeting at Crerar Church to explain the proposal. There will be additional meetings shortly thereafter. Further information is available now at the Chatham Business Office and of course at the Ward Office.
