  Students will receive FREE backpacks with lots of school supplies.
  
  Hey! Are you a local resident who wants to donate some school supplies to keep our area kids focused on studying? Then bring then on down to the event for Neil’s super-duper crew to give away!
  
  Please remember to bring at least 10 or more of anything: pens, pencils, paper pads, crayons. Whatever you can afford----- so at least 10 kids can get the extra supply do-dads per pack! Or come on down to the school and donate early!

DNA Info: 'The Wiz' Screening Encourages Audience To Sing Along, Dress in Costume

[VIDEO] So the Studio Movie Grill owned Chatham 14 Theaters still have those Black World Cinema every 1st Thursday. This Thursday, The Wiz - released back in 1978 starring the late Michael Jackson and Diana Ross - will be shown at the Chatham.

Black World Cinema's movie night this month at Studio Movie Grill-Chatham will feature "The Wiz" — and audience members are encouraged to sing along and dress in character.

The movie, starring singer Diana Ross and the late Michael Jackson in the "Wizard of Oz" remake, will be shown at 7 p.m. Thursday at the theater, 210 W. 87th St. Admission is $6.

Venisha White-Johnson, director of operations for the theater, said she hopes the audience will sing during some of the musical numbers.

"It's a fun way to engage the audience and have fun, too," she said. "We also want kids to come dressed up in their favorite 'Wiz' costume."

Free school supplies also will be given away, but White-Johnson said children are not required to wear a costume to receive the school supplies.

How appropriate that this event was scheduled because school has just started for the year.

CPS Strike update -- good news?

I was briefly at Burnside Scholastic Academy today. There are no photos, because there was really nothing to see.

From what I could see, there were only a handful of children at the school, and seemingly an equal number of CPS staff there (approximately 20).

One of the non-Burnside staff gathered the staff members who walked the children out, and saying they were to gather in a few minutes with some potential good news. He didn't share the details, so we shall see what the news brings.


The police officer on duty said there were approximately 50 teachers gathered outside Burnside from about 6:30am to 10:30am.  They protesters were loud (as most protetsing usually is), but peaceful.  From what he observed the teachers' plan was to picket during that time period every day.


As of 1:15 pm, there was no deal announced yet.

Concerned Citizens of Chatham: What to do this weekend?

Worlee notes seven events, two of them are ongoing events. There are two back to school events to be shared here hosted by a local church and by the West Chesterfield neighborhood.

 West Chesterfield's their back-to-school event from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM on Saturday at their community center 9351 S. Michigan Ave. Rev. Michael Pfleger is the keynote speaker with appearances by the Principal of Harlah High School and 6th Ward Ald. Roderick Sawyer.

Also on Saturday from 10 AM to 3 PM New Covenant MB Chicago located will host their own back-to-school fest to take place in the church's parking lot at 77th & Cottage Grove. It will feature free school physicals, dental check-ups, book bag giveaways, etc.

And of course those are not the only events taking place this Saturday. Refer to Worlee's posting!

Wives United In Prayer - School Supply Drive

A recent e-mail sent to us by a Carmen Collins of Wives United in Prayer (WUIP) let's us know about another event to take place on the South Side August 20th. The school supplies drive will take place at Avalon Park located at 1215 E. 83rd Street outside the boundaries of the 6th Ward, but expected to help support students in 6th ward schools as well.

Hello:

First, I want to thank you for keeping us "Concerned Citizens of the 6th ward" updated with your blog.  My husband and I are proud Chatham residents but can't help but to shake our heads at the increase in crime.  The lack of family values and pride that I was accustomed to when growing up in Chatham seems to be diminishing as new "blood" penetrates our beloved community.  As a young black married woman, this inspired me to want to give back to the community even more.  Yes, I serve on some boards to benefit the youth, but this didn't feel like enough to me.  So I created a not profit called Wives united In Prayer.  We've been in  existence for two years now and have various events throughout the year to show Marriage still matters to our younger generations.  We also focus on giving back to the community. Last September, we collected over 75 pairs of shoes to needy families.

Please find the attached flyers about our upcoming event to support students in the 6th ward.  We hope to provide (also asking for any school donations) at least 100 back to school bags for students.  Please feel free to contact me with any questions and post the flyers.  You can also advise any women interested in gaining more information about our organization and how to get involved can contact us via email or the phone number listed below.
