CBS Chicago: New city budget include police budget cuts

 

[VIDEO] There were members of the Chicago City Council who expressed interest in "defunding" the police here in Chicago. I didn't expect this, unless of course someone who observes the city finances expected this.

Also bear in mind Illinois voters will be voting on changing the state constitution to allow for a progressive or graduated income tax - you might have seen ads that advocate for a fair tax on the wealthy residents of this state. These cuts are also dependent upon any relief from the federal gov't and it seems for the moment none is forthcoming.

This has been a year of calamity. We've gotten the economic realities of the pandemic with many businesses considered non-essential at one point. Worse still jobs that were considered non-essential will probably not come back. And let's not forget the summer's unrest over police actions around America. Unfortunately some tough decisions will have to be made.

You will see Ward 9 Ald. Anthony Beale here agreeing with the mayor as far as why there shouldn't be deeper cuts in the CPD budget.

[VIDEO] I've been meaning to share this since getting the email blast from the Ald. Beale's office sharing the word on this. Ald. Beale has been a vocal opponent of Mayor Lori Lightfoot especially with the unrest going on in the city during our most tumultuous summer. You may have even seen him on FOX News last month and if you haven't here it is.

So here on this recent edition Beale talks about the financial issues facing the city during this pandemic and how he was able to prevent the looting of business in Ward 9.

Is it grandstanding to call for the Nat'l Guard?

I don't know if it's grandstanding if a group of Alderman want more action on the current issues affecting our city right now. Four Alderman which includes two Mayor Lightfoot foes Ald. Anthony Beale (Ward 9) and very vocal critic of the mayor Ald. Raymond Lopez (Ward 15) in addition to Ald. Leslie Hairston (Ward 5) and Ald. Anthony Napolitan (Ward 41).

BTW, I found an article from the Hyde Park Herald that stated that Ald. Hairston had removed her name from this letter calling for a special city council to discuss the proposals by Ald. Beale and Lopez to not only call for a special city council meeting on public safety and calling on the state to declare a state of emergency due to the increasing violence and threat of civil unrest to call for a four-month deployment of the Illinois Nat'l Guard.

With this said this was covered at CapFax on Wednesday. Probably the first time I saw grandstanding in regards to this proposal.

What is reasonable is what our state's Adjutant General Richard Neely - overseeing both the Army and Air Nat'l Guards - stated as far as using the Nat'l Guard in something of a law enforcement role:

“We’re not law enforcement officers,” Neely told the Tribune after the Guard’s mission ended earlier this summer without incident. “As guardsmen, we’re military. We go to war and we do not need to go to war in our cities. ... It was important to me (troops) were not putting their hands on civilians. So we didn’t do riot control and some of those other missions. We focused on supporting law enforcement, allowing them to do the things they’re best trained to do.”

Using the Nat'l Guard to help support the Chicago Police is nothing new. It's been proposed often over the years and the suggestion of martial law seems very defeatist in solving the issues that really require a law enforcement response with a respect to an individual's rights. I've said we should have more state police assistance in the city.

I've even seen Cook County Sheriff help out with some of this civil unrest, especially a Sheriff Deputy was blocking traffic from getting off the Dan Ryan when 87th Street was beset with looting.

However, as Rich Miller state's simple solutions are usually neither, but to keep the peace in the city in this uncertain time we need to get to work.

CBS Chicago: Some Aldermen Furious With Mayor Lightfoot Over How Looting Was Handled

[VIDEO] Ald. Anthony Beale (Ward 9) and Ald. Raymond Lopez (Ward 15) should be commended for calling into question Mayor Lori Lightfoot's response to the chaos in the city that spilled over from downtown into the neighborhoods on the city's south and west side on May 30 & 31. We see how the communities of both the 9th and 15th ward and other parts of the city was very devasted by the civil unrest that resulted in looting and vandalism.

I'm glad that the measures put in place in response to the unrest caused by the death of George Floyd when he was arrested by police in Minneapolis, Minnesota last month are being lifted. The civic unrest occurred just as the city was about to reopen after just about two months of shutdown due to the coronavirus.

While the city began to reopen on June 3, 2020 as planned I'm glad that the curfew has been lifted. Hopefully traffic in the city's downtown area will begin to return to normal once the bridges downtown are lowered (they were raised in an effort to control traffic into and out of downtown). Hopefully there will be further efforts to get things back to as close to normal as possible in the city's neighborhoods, especially on the south side.

BTW, I want to especially note the clash between Ald. Lopez and Mayor Lightfoot that resulted in a profanity laced argument between both on a conference call. I've heard Lopez on the radio over the past week as far as the looting in his neighborhood and I could tell he wasn't very happy with the response.

[VIDEO] While it seems that the newly freed Rod Blagojevich is in the news a lot right now, let's check out the revitalization taking place in Pullman. New projects for the national monument in addition to new businesses coming into that historic neighborhood.

We got former Mayor Rahm Emanuel speaking with a few nice words about the work of Pullman residents in their care of their community. We also see 9th Ward Alderman Anthony Beale speaking to WLS-TV's Karen Jordan about the positive developments in Pullman.

Travel Advisory: High Risk Funeral Procession

You might have seen this from Concerned Citizen's of Chatham and I see that Ald. Anthony Beale posted this as well (at least until it was deleted).

Let me state the route of this procession

Therefore neighborhood advocates involved with peacekeeping activities are calling for all area residents, businesses and faith based organizations to be aware and cautious when using, or crossing, Cottage Grove Ave between 115th street & 67th (Marquette road) between the hours of 1pm until 3pm 2 hours), where a procession leaving the "House of Hope" will travel to Oakwoods cemetery.

From what I'm seeing as far as comments this might involve the funeral of Lawrence "Big Law" Loggins who was murdered earlier this month. Police fear retaliation in his murder.

I got to say I'm with 9th Ward Alderman Anthony Beale on this:

Mayor Rahm Emanuel was urged Wednesday to permanently reassign police officers to gang-ravaged South Side and West Side districts instead of taking the political path of least resistance and assigning 600 additional officers only temporarily.

“We cannot continue to just move things around temporarily to get us past the weekend. We need a bold approach to make the entire city safe by putting `em where they’re needed and not where they’re wanted,” said Far South Side Ald. Anthony Beale (9th), former chairman of the City Council’s Police Committee.

“You go downtown and you still see an officer on every corner. You see `em on the Riverwalk. If you go into the community, you don’t have that same presence. We need to make this entire city safe and move those resources around from one end to the other.”

Beale said the reallocation that police Supt. Eddie Johnson promised two years ago — but failed to deliver — can be accomplished without putting North Side police districts at risk.

Whether aldermen will stand for it in the runup to the 2019 election — or whether Emanuel would risk the political fallout — is another story entirely.

“They’re gonna scream bloody murder. I get that because they feel that their community is being sacrificed, and it’s not,” Beale said of his colleagues.

“Our city has a black eye, and we need to heal that black eye. Sometimes, you have to piss some people off in order to do the right thing. Leadership is about making decisions that are unpopular. It’s an unpopular decision to move officers away from certain areas. But it will be beneficial to the entire city.”

 One promise, with the permanent reallocation of police officers to the city's hot spots we shouldn't have any bait trucks. Go into these hot spots aggressively but it's not necessary to be tricky like that!

You might have seen this in an e-mail blast from 9th Ward Alderman Anthony Beale marking today's holiday. Happy 4th of July or Independence Day. Hopefully you're having a very wonderful and safe holiday today!

Future Ald. Beale town halls #Ward09 #BuildingwithBeale

Ooops, I've done pretty badly with Ald. Anthony Beale's town halls having only attended two in recent years. So here are a list of remaining meetings for the rest of the year with a break in August and of course taking a break for the rest of the year after October.

Unlike former 6th Ward Ald. Fredrenna Lyle his office doesn't seem to announce who'll be speaking before hand. However he does have various officials with city government and some people from the community talking about what they're doing for their neighborhoods. It's worthwhile to come pay a visit. Of course he'll have his ward superintendent which was formerly Nicholas Smith who's now a state representative give updates from the streets and sanitation side.

The two times I attended a former police officer talked about utilizing local high school students to help paint murals. Another time representatives from the Chicago Transit Authority gave us an update on the future red line extension. Like I said these are worthwhile meetings to attend.

All of Ald. Beale's town halls or community meetings are held every 4th Tuesday starting at 6:30 PM at the Pullman Presbyterian Church 550 E. 103rd Street. Call his office at (773) 785-1100

BTW, I have to admit that I liked the branding the office seemed to have started "town halls" as opposed to "community meetings". Perhaps I'm being a tad nit-picky, but as far as an event discussing ward issues I just like town hall better than a community meeting. Anyway just my two cents that no one asked for... :P

Whole Foods Market distribution facility open in Pullman

This all occurred yesterday including the bread breaking which is what they do when they open new stores. For example they did the same thing upon opening the Whole Foods store at 63rd/Halsted. This is from the Mayor's ig page.
