Time for city sticker sales

It's that time of year again for your city of Chicago sticker sales and you can buy them at an Alderman's office for example according to this calendar from the Chicago City Clerk on Tuesday you can purchase your city sticker at the offices of Ald. Roderick T. Sawyer (6th ward) and Ald. Tom Tunney (44th ward).

Revenue from the City Vehicle Sticker helps fund the repair, maintenance and improvement of the more than 4,000 miles of Chicago's streets and roadways. City Vehicle Stickers are issued annually and are valid as soon as they are applied to the windshield.

In other words, as soon as you get your new City Vehicle Sticker, remove your old sticker and replace it with the new one. City Vehicle Stickers expire on June 30th of each year.


A Chicago resident with a vehicle that is used in the City of Chicago must purchase and display a City Vehicle Sticker.

COSTS

The cost of a passenger City Vehicle Sticker is $85 and larger passenger City Vehicle Stickers are $135.

Senior citizens, age 65 and older, are eligible to receive one sticker for $30.

Annual Residential Zone Parking is $25 and Daily Residential Parking Permits are $8 for 15 permits.

To purchase a City Vehicle Sticker, residents must bring their driver's license or renewal form and know their vehicle license plate number. In addition, this year's City Vehicle Stickers contain the vehicle make and model as another security feature.    

The Expired Meter: How To Get That #@%! City Sticker Off Your Windshield

It's that time of year again to start purchasing the city sticker for your vehicle. The first question I'm sure many of you have is, how do you get last year's city sticker off of your windshields? Well the Parking Ticket Geek has provided us with 10 tips to remove last year's sticker from your vehicle's windshield.

For next year's sticker, you may want to consider using Sticker Shield. (It's tip #6). It will make removing stickers easy. However, please not that new city stickers include your license plate number, so you can't transfer the sticker between cars.  This is important to remember if you want to avoid a parking ticket.

BTW, you can buy your city sticker next Monday - June 27th - from the Alderman's office located @ 463 1/2 E. 83rd Street between 9AM to 5PM. If you can't make it to the Alderman's office these are other locations courtesy of the City Clerk's Office where you can buy a city sticker. After a grace period city sticker enforcement will begin on July 16th

City Stickers available at Ald. Sawyer's office on June 27th

City stickers are available for purchase (renewal or new) from the City Clerk's office, as well as several locations around the city. See the official website, at www.chicityclerk.com for more details.

On Monday, June 27th, the city clerk will be at Alderman Sawyer's office in the 6th ward, from 9am to 5pm. The address is 463 1/2 E. 83rd Street. This location will have stickers available only for that day.

Went to buy a city vehicle sticker at the Alderman's office...again

Unlike my last experience a couple of years ago, there was less of a line standing outside of the office. There was a lone older gentleman handing out tickets for our place in line. The wait was relatively short since I was back out within half an hour.

What probably helped was that I came in relatively early which is not long after the scheduled starting time for city sticker sales. I would expect also that a lot of people had bought their city stickers already to at least avoid that July 15th deadline although it has been extended until the end of the month.

I would like to offer a comment to the city clerk office. It's great that they'll offer their services in the various wards of our city. Without hopefully having to travel very far from their homes to buy a city vehicle sticker. Otherwise city residents will have to either find a currency exchange or other vendor such as Seaway Bank to buy their stickers and permits in addition to going to offices of the City of Chicago in the neighborhoods in addition to going directly to city hall.

Anyway, I was purchasing a city sticker for my mother and since I only was prepared to pay for a city sticker I didn't write the check for a parking permit as well. I for some reason thought that the permit was already included in the price of a sticker if the permit was only going to be renewed. For the most part if you have a parking permit the vehicle sticker serves as the parking permit.

All the same I was prepared to use another method to pay for the permit. I had a check and I said that I could debit it. According to the young lady who was educating me, she said that they don't accept partial payments. So the comment is that the city clerk office should consider allowing people to split their payments on city stickers and permits between two methods. Well that's my idea and I'm sure it will be beneficial to a number of people around the city.

Your ticket to ride is going up

It looks like CTA fares will be going up in 2009 for the first time in three years.

CTA President Ron Huberman didn't come right out and say that after testifying Thursday before a City Council committee. But he might as well have.

"Ultra-low diesel, which is what we use on our buses, has increased 80 percent. Next year, we will be spending $50 million more for the same quantity of fuel than we spent the prior year. Electrical costs are coming in over 25 percent higher than they were the prior year," Huberman said.

"The real estate transfer tax is coming in substantially below what we had anticipated. The sales tax is coming in at 9 percent below. And the free rides program is also impacting our bottom line. When you take a look at the totality of those factors, it is creating a very challenging budget year."

Huberman won't officially lower the boom until next Thursday when the CTA budget is unveiled. A CTA board meeting is scheduled for the following day. But it sure sounds like a done deal.

"I cannot stand here today and say it's going to happen. I can tell you we're seriously contemplating it," he said, refusing to say how much.

It should be noted that also in this article the chairman of the RTA, Jim Reilly, said that rising costs and sagging revenues could cause CTA and Pace to raise their fares. He says that it wasn't a bad thing because in the past fare increases had been delayed until there was a crisis. At which point there are large increases that unduly burden transit passengers.

BTW, the RTA (Regional Transit Authority) is an overseeing agency over the CTA, Pace, & Metra.
