Earlier this month we shared info from Worlee Glover on the 2019 race for ward 6 alderman a rematch between Ald. Roderick Sawyer and Richard Wooten who also ran for alderman in 2011 and 2015.

Recently I procured a flyer for Paul Collins who is running for Alderman in Ward 9. He seeks to challenge Alderman Anthony Beale in 2019.

Howard Brookins mail for US Congress

Tomorrow is primary election day and one of the races Democratic voters will consider is the 1st congressional district race Bobby Rush has a challenger in Ald. Howard Brookins (21st ward) who shared this tidbit in a mailer that you see below:

I see got to hit him for that missing money for a job center. A story we've written about a few times in the past. Is this enough to propel Brookins from Chicago's City Council to Washington? Good question.

Another palm card mailer

You may have recieved this palm card from the Cook County Democratic Party in the mail recently. A sample ballot endorsing the many candidates for judge in the primary election next Tuesday. It is clear that this palm card is something you can bring into the voting booth with you.

Mayor Emanuel mailer

Over the weekend you may have gotten this in additon to several mailers from Rahm Emanuel's campaign. This is of most interest because of Emanuel's role in the shutdown of CTA's Dan Ryan branch of the Red Line in 2013. You may have also seen a TV ad about this highlighting how he made sure minority contractors worked on the rebuilding of that branch.

Unfortunately these are the only mailers I have received from any of the candidates for mayor and there is a decent number of challengers to Mayor Emanuel this year. Including perennial candidate Dock Walls, Willie Wilson, Bob Fioretti, and Chuy Garcia. I also wanted to note this article from the Reader about the mayor never leveling with the public on his decision to close mental health clinics around the city.

Finally here's that red line ad from the mayor's campaign actually I never realized he did two of them. This is the one I found on YouTube [VIDEO]

So has anything said my any mayoral candidates including the current Mayor that could sway your vote on Tuesday?

Ald. Beale mailer #4 #Aldertrack

This mailer attempts to show that Ald. Beale supports reform of the red light camera program. From especially Harold "Noonie" Ward, the Alderman has been hit on the red light cameras during the course of this campaign. Is anything said by Ald. Beale could cause anyone to sway their vote?

Slightly different mailer for Ald. Anthony Beale that the other two already posted. He highlights his support for various projects in the 9th ward such as the reconstruction of the CTA 95th terminal, city colleges' logistics hub, the Walmart and shopping center in Pullman, Method factory, and more affordable housing. Of course he highlights bringing to his ward new jobs with higher wages and fighting to raise the minimum wage.

We recently received this Beale flyer in the mail. It's similar to the last one, but makes slightly different points from the first one.

Also please don't forget about the DCP 9th ward forum at Progressive Church - 26 E. 127th St. - on Satuday at 2 PM.

Mailer in the race for 9th ward Alderman

Received this mailer for 9th ward Alderman Anthony Beale recently. It touts his accomplishments and his future goals for the ward. There are pictures of himself during a groundbreaking for an athletic center and the opening of a new store. He mentions new grocery stores, however, Harold "Noonie" Ward has been hitting him on that fact. Although Walmart does sell groceries even if it's not considered a grocery store.

Also this was recently recieved in the mail however Aldertrack noted this mailer from Beale's challenger Harold "Noonie" Ward. It resembles a speeding ticket and attempts to attach Ald. Beale to the controvery involving those red light cameras in the city. Other than the lack of grocery stores in the 9th, this is another issue Ward has hit the incumbent Alderman on.

Mailer In the 6th Ward Aldermanic Race

Received this mailer recently in the mail from Alderman Roderick Sawyer. It states his stance on education as well as his endorsement by the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU).

There have been allegations that someone is going in residents mailboxes and removing mailers. If there are any other mailers, please contact us and we will post.

Seaway Bank celebrates their 50th year anniversary

Seaway Bank & Trust Company main branch located @ 645 E. 87th Street will be host to a 50th year celebration on Friday, January 2, 2015. It will be one in a series of events as next year Seaway Bank celebrates being in business 50 years. It will definitely be noted in our New Year's Eve year in review to be published on New Year's Eve!

A Roseland Heights neighborhood watch sign...

Years ago when I started this blog, I was keen on making signs like the one above more or less as a marketing tool although that plan never got off the ground. The idea was to produce signs that could be displayed in the front window of a home or business.

Thankfully some of our neighborhood associations already produce such signs as the one above that were handed out at a recent Roseland Heights neighborhood meeting. The scan above and below this paragraph were of the signs handed out at the recent meeting from this past Tuesday.

The scans you see below Roseland Heights residents may have found on their porches, screen doors or perhaps mail boxes on a Wednesday morning. The Roseland Heights neighborhood watch signs were produced by West Chesterfield Community Association President Michael LaFargue. Provided with these signs were a legal-sized paper flyer that highlighted many of the accomplishments of Mr. LaFargue in real estate and as a community activist.

I wonder if this is a concerted effort between Roseland Heights and Mr. LaFargue or both were done independently. So this means there are questions and perhaps there are some answers.

BTW, the scans of both signs have been uploaded to my scribd account. The Roseland Heights version and the Michael LaFargue version. Both versions are printable especially with photo paper available from either Walmart or Target.

LSC election flyer and some thoughts on education...

Monday and Tuesday are days for LSC Elections. Monday was LSC election for elementary schools and Tuesday are such days for the high schools. 

It was my intention to post the above flyer over the weekend unfortunately it seems I kept running into a snag with regards to posting it online whether through Blogger or the FB page. Anyway if you're living at least in the Roseland Heights or West Chesterfield area you may have found this in your screendoors or mailboxes. Sharon Banks-Pincham represents the community on the LSCs for both Gillespie Elementary and Harlan Community Academy.

Hopefully you were able to be informed of the LSC elections on Monday and were able to vote. Hopefully you're able to vote on Tuesday for LSC members at your local high schools.

Speaking of education, on Monday Rich Miller of the Capitol Fax ranted about the state of education in Illinois. Many of us are concerned about the state of education in Chicago especially for the K-12 set. So he starts out with comparing charter schools with the neighborhood public schools and states:

I got this flyer in the mail a few weeks ago. Don't have a feel for this race as Bill Beavers face off to retain his seat on the county board against Elgie Sims. All I can say about this race is that Rich Miller @ The Capitol Fax hopes Sims will pull this one out. Unfortunately this race may well be a low priority amongst other races that get more press!

This next flyer was found in the Target parking lot on 87th and Cottage Grove. It reeks of a certain amount of desperation for Todd Stroger.

For Todd Stroger a lot of people will say that the county is in better shape than both city and state governments.  This is a sign for him posted near Michigan and 98th Place.

 This house is located between Wabash and Michigan on 95th Street. This home is almost run down and I'm uncertain that anyone lives there anymore, but it sure became a bulletin board of sorts for campaign signs.

You see a poster in the above pic for Slyvester Baker. He hopes to unseat Sheriff Tom Dart. Unfortunately that's very unlikely and you'll see a Cook County Style squash-match for Baker. Below is a flyer I have around the house for him. But you do see posters for him around the community in neighborhood businesses. Just go to Izola's on 79th Street or walk up and down 87th Street in certain commercial properties!

Don't forget to vote on Tuesday Feb. 2nd. If you don't know where you polling place is then look here!

BTW, it hits me that I saw a couple of people with a stack of signs for an appellate court candidate Friday afternoon near 95th and Michigan. They had a significant stack of them and they may not have been through for the day. Unfortunately I couldn't tell you who this judicial candidate was.

I was on the red line Friday morning and at either 79th or 69th street a street preacher walked on. He had  flyers (such as the one above) with him and started telling his story about how he was down and out on the L and eventually turned his life around and a ministry gave him some help and even sent him to bible college. That being said he proceeded to quote not only scripture, but also talk in tongues and was talking up a storm as the train headed downtown.

Eventually he announced to the car that he's got to go and suddenly the people on the train miraculously was offering dollars to this preacher as he performer like he was at a church service. For their donations many of these people are given either cookies or candy bars. Either they were into his preaching or they really wanted him to go. Unfortunately he didn't go away soon and continued to perform on the train talking to an elderly lady and loudly until he finally got off the train at Cermak.

Believe it or not, I caught up with JP Paulus (you know him by now I hope the original other blogger here) today downtown. And we talked about this flyer he raised the issue that there is a small possibility that this gentleman may not be apart of this organization and is raising money on his own. Well there is only one way to verify this and that's by making a phone call to this organization and asking if they have people on the CTA preaching and fundraising.

That being said, I didn't post this to "snitch". In fact on the Dan Ryan red line for the most part this is seen the most where people either beg, panhandle or even fundraise on the train. In fact Christian Outreach has often had people on the train fundraising so this is in fact nothing new. Indeed I was wondering if they still existed since I haven't seen their people express their message in some years.

The main reason why I post this is to say that if you find this to be a legit organization that can truly deliver people from whatever their issues are in life, then perhaps you should consider donating to them. Hopefully they won't have to fundraise and preach on the L in the future. If I understand policy in general this activity is generally not appropriate on the CTA.

ARCHIVED NEWS: 79th St. Business Association debuts at neighborhood mixer

This story actually appeared in the Citizen newspaper on the week of April 11, 2007. It seems to refer to the stretch of 79th Street east of Cottage Grove. This is part of an effort to change the general community block-by-block and starting this business association is part of that. It mentions the Regal Theater which was just about to reopen back then, but is currently facing foreclosure.

Anu's Store opening on 79th

A new store, called Anu's Store, is opening on 79th. There isn't an exact date yet, but they have been working on it for several months.

Their website is anusstore.com , but it looks like just a place holder for now...GoDaddy is exploiting that by having questionable links on the placeholder site.

The strange thing is, Canik's Conevnience store recently closed a couple of doors down. And Chatham Food Market is just down the street (literally). So is a conevnience store really needed? One that provides ethnic food (such as from nations in West Africa) would be unique. But are we at a point where it would be frequented by customers?

At the bottom of this entry is a photo of the building , from the Cook County Assessor Website's property search. Unfortunately, it doesn't have the front view of the storefront. But it gives you an idea where it is.

Last day for the Seaway Bank farmer's market

Well it's been going on since July 15th and the end of the season is near. I bring it up on this blog so that maybe if you read this blog you can help this farmer's market go out with a strong bang this year. Hopefully it may come back next year if Seaway wants to continue to play host to this market.

The last day is on September 30th, a Wednesday between 9AM to 2PM located at the southeast corner of 87th & Langley. If you want more info call (773) 602-4865 or go to Seaway's website @ www.seawaybank.us.

CAMPAIGN LEAFLET: Kari K. Steele for Commissioner of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago

There were workers at the Chicago Football Classic (BTW Mississippi Valley State University defeated Alabama State University 10-3 at Soldier Field) seeking petition signatures for Danny Davis and Dorothy Brown and of course for Kari Steele with petitions and leaflets (you can click here to find a version to print off if you support her candidacy). She is a resident of the 6th Ward and Chair of the 6th Ward Young Democrats. It was mentioned briefly on the CAPCC blog that she spoke at the CAPCC monthly meeting about her candidacy.

This is not an endorsement, but I would like to wish Ms. Steele the best of luck in her endeavor to win election to the Water Reclamation district. She was probably amongst the first in the community to reach out to this blog so certainly I'm very appreciative of that.

Many who read this blog may not be very familiar with this political body so I'll offer a previous post and a direct link to the Water Reclamation District just so that you may familiarize yourself with what exactly they do.

EVENT: Seaway Art Fair - August 15-16.

Check them out and be prepared to make some purchases. It is located in the far east parking lot of Seaway Bank & Trust on 87th Street & Langley. This is their 26th Annual Art Fair and this should be a place to buy work from black artists. If you want somewhere interesting to go one summer afternoon drop by this one. There will be some food and live entertainment if artwork isn't your thing.
