Stossel: Coronavirus cans the bag ban (taxes)

[VIDEO] Grocery stores and pharmacies are considered essential business as people still want to pick up prescriptions and over the counter medication. People also still have to eat and while many restaurants are open for take out orders only, your best bet is still go to the grocery store and find your ingredients so that you can cook.

I noted this a while ago in a post about coronavirus numbers and the effect of the pandemic on "essential" retail. A few grocery stores aren't allowing for the usage of re-usable bags I know for sure the Jewel-Osco, Whole Foods Market, and Target if you go to a cashier they won't package your items in your reusable bags.

Personally reusable bags are very convenient, however, what's noted in this John Stossel video is that there are many of us who don't take the time out to clean them. Sometimes I throw them in the washers, however, sometimes it's just something that I don't take the time to do. If you don't clean them then you could be carrying microbes on your reusable bags that are often dangerous.

Stossel takes aim at the attempts by governments around the nation to ban plastic bags. Chicago has asserted a 7 cent bag tax to encourage use of reusable bags. It's understood that they want to discourage use of those plastic "Jewel" bags. Unfortunately whether or not you use a "Jewel" bag or a paper bag, you still get charged a 7 cent tax. And paper is not only better for the environment not only because they are reusable (even if fragile as you see in video above) they are also recyclable, yet if we use a paper bag from a store we STILL get charged a tax.

Another thing of note is that while Whole Foods, Target, and Jewel that I know of for sure seemed to have waived collecting the city' bag tax. If you go to Mariano's and use a bag with them they will still charge you the 7 cent tax.

In my opinion, who knows if this is going away. Since the pandemic has caused the shut down of many businesses, surely tax revenues are down. Since in many places there is already a bag tax enacted, my idea is this is one convenient tax that won't go away. Especially since people during this difficult time still got to go out to shop for "essential" items.

Any other retailer - especially grocery stores - still charging you the 7 cent bag tax? Let us know...

Anu's Store opening on 79th

A new store, called Anu's Store, is opening on 79th. There isn't an exact date yet, but they have been working on it for several months.

Their website is anusstore.com , but it looks like just a place holder for now...GoDaddy is exploiting that by having questionable links on the placeholder site.

The strange thing is, Canik's Conevnience store recently closed a couple of doors down. And Chatham Food Market is just down the street (literally). So is a conevnience store really needed? One that provides ethnic food (such as from nations in West Africa) would be unique. But are we at a point where it would be frequented by customers?

At the left is a graphic of the flyer announcing the store -- i happened to find it on the ground.

At the bottom of this entry is a photo of the building , from the Cook County Assessor Website's property search. Unfortunately, it doesn't have the front view of the storefront. But it gives you an idea where it is.

Chatham Food Market Outdoor Cookout

Mark your calendars for Saturday, August 1st to be held at the Chatham Food Market's parking lot at 327 E. 79th Street. CAPCC blog tells us what's going on:
Everyone in the community is invite to stop by for the great servings of food with games and prizes! Vendors, including Frito-Lay, among others, will be there exhibiting their food offerings. Mr. Derrick Griffin (of Griffin Cleaners) and his wife will join in with the cooking. So all customers and the community as a whole are welcome to come to the Outdoor Cookout beginning at 11 A.M. until 5 P.M.
How about that for a non-Wal-Mart story?

Chatham Food Market might want to update their website with this story.

Special grocery deals in the mail

Still have yesterday's mail? What i mean is -- the ads that come in the Tuesday mail? If you just automatically throw them out -- you might want to think again!

They have some special local-only deals in them.

One is from Chatham Food Market. They have stopped hand delivering their sales paper in the neighborhood, but have instead put it in the mail. They've got some good deals and have added the store's personalities on the top. The Market has apparently disassociated itself with Certified Grocers, at least as far as ads (where other stores in the Certified chain/alliance have had similar items on sale, including lesser-known brand labels).

Also, the Jewel's (yes, i know the sign says Jewel, without an 's'...but this is Chicago!) on 87th also has some special deals just for that location. And those do NOT appear in the Sunday Tribune!

Let us know what you find!

Chatham Food Market feature - Robert

Last week's ad for Chatham Food Market featured Robert from the meat department.

Last week was Ms. Bernice. This seems like a great idea, and helps us get to know more personally the people who serve us at this local grocery market. Yes, the owner has changed hands, but some of the employees are the ones you have known for many years -- so at least support them!

Chatham Food Market honors its history

Though it seems like several people have stopped shopping at Chatham Food Market (because it is now owned by, as one community resident said in a public meeting, “A-rabs”), they are actually honoring its history as Chatham Food Center.

They have a new website. It’s just a home page at this point, but they start off with honoring Leonard and Donna Harris.

The website address, chathamfoodmarket.com, is in on the latest ad, which you may have gotten in the mail. In it, it honors longtime employee Ms. Bernice. I also know some have been laid off from Chatham Food Market, which then affected sales. But it might be wise to relent on your anger, as Ms. Bernice and others are in fact still employed there.
