YOU helped a local couple in their adoption process!

We wrote about John and Nicole Anthony on October 10 regarding the adoption resources contest they were a part of. We encouraged you, our readers, to vote for them via Facebook.  They won that contest, thanks in part to your help!

Nicole and John Anthony of Chatham with their 3-year-old Golden Doodle Maestro, whom they adopted from a friend in Washington who was breeding and selling puppies to fund an in-vitro fertilization procedure. The Anthonys considered in-vitro fertilization before deciding on adoption, which they say is less expensive and more reliable option.

Lizzie Schiffman of DNAinfo.com interviewed me (JP Paulus) to talk about how the blog impacted voting. She did a great job withthe story.

You can find the article here, entitled "Facebook Contest Helps Couple Get Closer to Dream of Adoption "

Congratulations to the Anthonys on winning and helping their next steps to building their family!   And thanks to Lizzie and DNAinfo for the write-up. We will post more on them in the future, as they report on our neighborhoods!

I am Englewood logo contest...

Now this is what I'm talking about. It looks like there is finally a call by the neighborhoods to brand themselves. In this case it's Englewood who had been represented negatively by The Chicago Neighborhoods and Slightly Insulting Chicago Posters. Now it's great to see Englewood start to take matters in their own hands:
The Invest In Englewood Advisory Council is actively seeking a locally designed logo for Englewood. The logo will be used for all marketing materials for the Invest In Englewood Campaign which is being managed by the Greater Englewood CDC.

The Invest in Englewood Campaign is a comprehensive initiative whose mission is to rebrand, rebuild, and revitalize the economy of Greater Englewood by building on existing community assets and facilitating collaboration between residents and other key stakeholders.

The contest is for students of Englewood in grades 7th- 12th who live or go to school in the Englewood neighborhood. We are working to create signage, banners, yard signs, t-shirts, etc. and hope to have a symbol/logo that represent the pride, hope, and opportunities that lie within Englewood. We are accepting submissions until November 28th.

Download attached form for contest details.

The theme that will be use for many of these materials will be Rebrand. Rebuild. Revitalize. We hope the logo/symbol will represent these three important elements of the campaign. For more details call 866-845-1032 or email your submissions to abutler @ greaterenglewoodcdc . org!

We need everyone's help in order to REBRAND. REBUILD. REVITALIZE Englewood!
And again, we're going to make another call for more people who are artists or graphic designers to make logos or brands for their respective communities. Hopefully we will all see what the residents of Englewood can eventually come up with.

Flyer is below, if you want to spread the word!

To all my friends, as many of you may or may not know Nicole and I (John Anthony)  are planning on using adoption to build our family. I will post more information tomorrow morning. Please help us out. Thanks.

The spaces in between

[VIDEO] There is a contest organized by Place Making Chicago which allows any group to show how they have temporarily remade vacant space. We could be talking about an unoccupied building or a vacant lot. Do we have any entries from our part of town.

There are some lots I wish we could turn into something more production. My first thought was the site of the late Rhodes Theater, but we could also keep our eye on that squatter house we've been keeping our eye on located at 64 E. 95th Street.

Any other vacant spaces you wish to be remade into something more productive?

Hat-tip Gaper's Block.

Imagine Englewood If essay competion: Why Englewood needs a youth center

Today recieved this e-mail about an essay contest sponsored by Imagine Englewood If. Below is the text of that email and an entry form for those Englewood residents who are interested in being part of this contest. The above quote is from someone who is involved in this contest:
Jamal is a 15-year old student at Paul Robeson High School in Englewood. His words were not coached. They came from the heart of a young man who lives at the epicenter of the violence that has taken a foothold in his community. In fact, Jamal was the inspiration for the "Pocket Change 4 Youth" Campaign for a Youth & Family Community Center. He now serves as Youth Co-Chairperson of the “Pocket Change 4 Youth Essay Contest”.

Kinda’ busy? We understand. That’s why we have extended the contest to March 31st. Please take a moment to sponsor someone you know, or consider entering the competition yourself. In these turbulent times, it is one way to signal your support to the children of Englewood who strive for peace in their community. Remember, the essay theme is, "Why Englewood Needs a Youth Center" and the contest is open to anyone who lives, attends school, or works in Englewood. Attached you will find the Essay Contest Entry Form (flyer on front, entry form on back). It includes vital information about the competition to help guide participants through the process.
Awards will be presented on April 7th at “Open Mic Nite”, a teen summit and teen café, which marks the beginning of a direct action campaign to rally support for the center. All ages are welcome. For more information, contact Imagine Englewood if at 773.488.6704, fax: 773.488.6705; email: jhill705 [@] sbcglobal.net; website: www.imagineenglewoodif.org.

Chicago 2016 is hosting a "Why Chicago" video contest

I just got this email this afternoon:
Hi,

I’ve been reading your posts on the Chicago 2016 effort, and I want to invite you and your readers to help America win the Host City privilege by participating in a new video contest. Some of the earliest submissions have been passionate, funny, whimsical and even moving. Check them out here.

Starting today through November 25, 2008, you can visit www.Chicago2016.org/contest to upload (or just vote) on user-generated videos that capture the spirit of Chicago and tell the world why the Windy City should host the Games in 2016. Finalists will be selected by a panel of judges based on a combination of popular vote and the following criteria:
  • Originality
  • Creativity
  • relevance to the "Why Chicago" theme
  • production quality
The Grand Prize winner will receive a trip for two to Vancouver for a behind the scenes tour of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games and have their video featured on NBC 5 News Today.

Second place will win $5,000 worth of video production equipment of their choice

And you don’t have to upload a video to win. One lucky voter will be chosen at random to win a trip for six to the United States Olympic Committee's (USOC) headquarters in Colorado Springs to see the USOC's world-class training facilities, watch Olympians and Olympic hopefuls train and participate in a U.S. Olympic sport experience.

I hope you can participate, either by creating a video, voting, or letting others know about the “Why Chicago” campaign. Please feel free to get in touch with any questions – thanks!

-Steve
If you're interested I'll forward the e-mail to you. But here's the company website that Mr. Steve Elwell represents at Hill & Knowlton.
