BlueCross BlueShield of Illinois Community Care Fair

I got one of these flyers from people passing them out to random people on 95th. I'm guessing this is related to the offices BlueCross BlueShield of Illinois plans to open at the former Target store on Marshfield Plaza on 119th street. Either way here's another local event to take advantage of.

Want to talk about the elections?

Want to talk about the election results? Not just nationally, but more importantly, locally!

Will we see any noticeable effect from write-in candidates? How will other controversial races fare, such at the 10th district State Representative (expelled Derrick Smith) or the 2nd Congressional (Jesse Jackson Jr.)

We'll talk about it tonight through a Facebook Chat event. We'll host it through JP's special Facebook group, Talking Chicago Elections.

Join us (JP Paulus, Worlee, and Levois) tonight at 9pm , and let's talk about it!

See the Bears on the Big Screen @ Chatham ICE Theaters!

Are you going to this event?

Tell us what it was like!

Should other businesses (like restaurants) hold events like this?

And more important -- would you actually go?

LSC meetings this month

Since I have successfully attended three LSC meetings (two each for Bennett/Shedd Elementary and one for Harlan High School) before 2010 came to a close. I'm going to go for both this month as the schools have returned to session in the new year.

To clarify, yes Bennett School (located @ 10115 South Prairie Avenue)  isn't in the 6th Ward. It's just south of the Calumet (Bishop Ford) Expressway in the 9th Ward. However, Shedd School (located @ 200 E. 99th Street) which is located in the 6th Ward is connected with Bennett School as it is considered a branch. Thus the Bennett LSC is also over Shedd School. Their meeting is scheduled on January 12, 2011 @ 3:30 PM. Check out this LSC meeting dates for Bennett/Shedd.

Harlan's LSC (located @ 9652 S. Michigan Ave.) will meet on January 20, 2011 @ 6:30 PM. You can check out dates for Harlan's events through their official website.

I sincerely hope that I won't be the only member of the public to attend either meeting as had happened at both Harlan's and Bennett's past meetings. It is my belief the community should know what's going on at their neighborhood schools as in some way what goes on or doesn't go on will affect us in someway in the future.

Also, in recent months a community representative at Ruggles School @ 7831 S. Prairie Ave has reached out to the blog. Hopefully in future the community could pay a visit to LSC meeting there as well. I expect to post a notice for future meetings there, but the Ruggles LSC usually meets on the last Thursday of every month.

Could the Chicago Marathon work here?

So my family is watching some minutes of the CHicago Marathon, and seeing how the coverage highlights neighborhoods, and shows large crowds in the Downtown, near South, and North side Lakefront neighbrohoods.

NBC just featured Lakeview, with the coverage highlighting the Boystown portion (which is approximately 3200 North).

Would Chatham )(and the South Side in general) benefit form having the Chicago Marathon, or (more realistically) another type of race, wther walking , running, biking, or even skateboarding? Would a race bring business in, and expose new customers to what we have to offer.

Or would the hassle be too much?  We know closing down 75th for an extended time hurt...but how about for a SHORT time, such as EARLY Sunday morning?

Sleep out at Cole Park - Friday August 20th

Ald. Lyle was on the Garrard McClendon Live Show on CLTV on Thursday, July 22. She was being interviewed regarding the latest police slaying. During that time she mentioned a community sleepover being planned. Basically , neighborhood residents staying in the park, like camping, and taking it back for the community.

The date is Friday night, August 20th at Cole Park , 85th & King Drive.

When I mentioned this to my wife, her immediate reaction was to shake her head and say no. Anyone else facing this problem -- of wanting to be involved, but being shut down by people close to you? I wish i could get my daughter out...i just might go by myself if i have to.

We could use an event like that at Ruggles Playlot, just to stave off the alcoholics and gangbangers ruining the park

One other footnote -- I think Garrard McClendon Live is a great show, and I'd love the opportunity to pursuade Garrard and his family to move to our area. People like him, who provided the best reaction to the worst circumstance, is a great community leader, and would be an absolute asset here. I'd love to have him as a neighbor!
