#TBT A former stock car race track near 87th/Greenwood

Saw this a few days ago via Lee Bey on twitter. Along with a photo of this race car track and the cover of a program from this track.

I had no idea there was once a stock car race track at 87th and Greenwood (on the south side of 87th). I found this tonight while looking up something else. Speedway operated from 1948 to 1956—altho the abandoned oval remained until at least 1959, according to Historic Aerials. pic.twitter.com/vFRMm1VU1C

Basically I remember this lot as the home of the former Handy Andy hardware stores, however, the traces of this race track are no longer there. What we have these days are mostly physical therapy and medical offices there.

Chesterfield Community Council on Target closure #6WardChicago #Ward09

Since the announcement of closures for the Target stores in Chatham & Morgan Park, the Chesterfield Community Council share a couple of posts from their FB page illustrating some history and their thoughts on the closure.

We'll start with some letters from over 20 years ago. Noted here is the work of the Chesterfield community and others to bring that Target store to it's current - and soon to be closing - location at 87th/Cottage Grove.

The next post is regarding the closure and perhaps another call to boycott Target's decision to close the store on 87th Street. The "hashtag" is #CutTheCard, perhaps referring to Target's Red Card (and for the purposes of this post I won't be linking).

Another palm card mailer

You may have recieved this palm card from the Cook County Democratic Party in the mail recently. A sample ballot endorsing the many candidates for judge in the primary election next Tuesday. It is clear that this palm card is something you can bring into the voting booth with you.

If you live in Chicago's 9th ward you may have recieved this in your mailboxes. This is a palm card that you can take into the voting booths next Tuesday. So for 9th ward residents the Cook County Democratic Party isn't picking a horse for US Senate, President, or 1st congressional district.

Mayor Emanuel mailer

Over the weekend you may have gotten this in additon to several mailers from Rahm Emanuel's campaign. This is of most interest because of Emanuel's role in the shutdown of CTA's Dan Ryan branch of the Red Line in 2013. You may have also seen a TV ad about this highlighting how he made sure minority contractors worked on the rebuilding of that branch.

Unfortunately these are the only mailers I have received from any of the candidates for mayor and there is a decent number of challengers to Mayor Emanuel this year. Including perennial candidate Dock Walls, Willie Wilson, Bob Fioretti, and Chuy Garcia. I also wanted to note this article from the Reader about the mayor never leveling with the public on his decision to close mental health clinics around the city.

Finally here's that red line ad from the mayor's campaign actually I never realized he did two of them. This is the one I found on YouTube [VIDEO]

LaFargue mail #Aldertrack

I had been starting to wonder when we'd see some LaFargue mailers from the 9th ward. We got an e-mail with the mailer below with the message that we'll start seeing them this week. Anything said in this piece that could sway your vote?

Ald. Beale mailer #4 #Aldertrack

This mailer attempts to show that Ald. Beale supports reform of the red light camera program. From especially Harold "Noonie" Ward, the Alderman has been hit on the red light cameras during the course of this campaign. Is anything said by Ald. Beale could cause anyone to sway their vote?

Slightly different mailer for Ald. Anthony Beale that the other two already posted. He highlights his support for various projects in the 9th ward such as the reconstruction of the CTA 95th terminal, city colleges' logistics hub, the Walmart and shopping center in Pullman, Method factory, and more affordable housing. Of course he highlights bringing to his ward new jobs with higher wages and fighting to raise the minimum wage.

We recently received this Beale flyer in the mail. It's similar to the last one, but makes slightly different points from the first one.

Mailer in the race for 9th ward Alderman

Received this mailer for 9th ward Alderman Anthony Beale recently. It touts his accomplishments and his future goals for the ward. There are pictures of himself during a groundbreaking for an athletic center and the opening of a new store. He mentions new grocery stores, however, Harold "Noonie" Ward has been hitting him on that fact. Although Walmart does sell groceries even if it's not considered a grocery store.

Also this was recently recieved in the mail however Aldertrack noted this mailer from Beale's challenger Harold "Noonie" Ward. It resembles a speeding ticket and attempts to attach Ald. Beale to the controvery involving those red light cameras in the city. Other than the lack of grocery stores in the 9th, this is another issue Ward has hit the incumbent Alderman on.

Mailer In the 6th Ward Aldermanic Race

Received this mailer recently in the mail from Alderman Roderick Sawyer. It states his stance on education as well as his endorsement by the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU).

There have been allegations that someone is going in residents mailboxes and removing mailers. If there are any other mailers, please contact us and we will post.

Seaway Bank celebrates their 50th year anniversary

Seaway Bank & Trust Company main branch located @ 645 E. 87th Street will be host to a 50th year celebration on Friday, January 2, 2015. It will be one in a series of events as next year Seaway Bank celebrates being in business 50 years. It will definitely be noted in our New Year's Eve year in review to be published on New Year's Eve!

Happy election day 2014!!!

I voted early today and when leaving my local precinct recieved one of these palm cards from a petition collector for 9th Ward Alderman Anthony Beale. So these are the horses he's picking for today. Polls today don't close until 7 PM so hopefully many of you will make it to your precinct by 7!

Hopefully we will know for sure which of these candidates especially at the top of the ticket will reign victorious!

However he believes that long term solutions will require the city to look at new revenue.

South side public meeting: streets for cycling plan

Below is a flyer to a meeting for south side residents on May 31 at the Gary Comer Center located at 7200 S. Ingleside with regards to the placement of bicycling facilities and the locations of bicycling trails along the south side of town. This was mentioned at the recent Roseland Heights meeting in addition to the Major Taylor Trail from the Dan Ryan Woods to Riverdale. How many of us utilize a bicycle to get around the city? How many of us could benefit from making our streets more friendly to bicyclists?
