Christopher Erby credits a new technology center that opened in October with helping him find full-time employment at the nation's largest retailer-Walmart.It's still a tough economy and job market out there. This is the time to find some resources and then utilize them so that you may be able to get ahead!
"I owe it all to to them. Now I am working and I love what I do at Walmart," said Erby, 20. "It's hard out here and when you do not have a lot of skills it's even harder. I'm glad someone other than my mother cared enough to help me find a job."
Erby, who began his new job in November, first learned about the Teamwork Englewood Community Technology Center, 815 W. 63rd St., from his mother who works as a security guard in the building. He lives with his mom in Englewood and do not have a computer to search for jobs.
"Now, when my benefits kick in next month I can get a computer with my discount," he added. "I was working part-time at this Family Dollar store (in Englewood) for two-weeks before Walmart offered me a full-time position. I hated working at the dollar store. I didn't see myself going anywhere there."
Going places is what Rosalind Moore, program manager for the center, aims to help do for everyone who walks through the center's doors.
"I grew up in Englewood and I am happy to be back doing what I love, and that's helping people," said Moore. "I get so tired of reading about all the negative things that occur in Englewood. This center is something positive and we are doing positive things here for the community."
Free services offered at the center include job readiness prep, technology classes, social service referrals, tutoring, ex-offender assistance such as GED preparation and expungment, and mentoring programs for boys and girls. The center is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Even before the economy crashed, just 15% of African-American teenagers in Chicago -- fewer than one in six -- was employed.Via CapFax morning shorts!
That's among the starker findings of a new report on youth and jobs being released Tuesday by the Alternate Schools Network and the Chicago Urban League.
Conducted by researcher Andrew Sum at Northeastern University in Boston, the study concludes that youth of all racial and socio-economic backgrounds increasingly do not work, but finds that the problem is particularly severe among minorities.
For instance, nearly 48 out of 100 affluent, white teens in Illinois held a job in 2008, versus just 13 of 100 low-income black teens, and just 23% of Latino teens.

Chicago's unemployment rate was 8.2-percent in January. The metropolitan area lost 106,000 jobs between January 2008 and January 2009. 34 year old Jelani Adofo Shaw has been jobless for a year.
SHAW: There are jobs out there. It's just a lot of people looking for jobs right now. I've gone on a couple interviews and what-have-you but unfortunately I haven't got the offer letter just yet.
Illinois' unemployment rate jumped to 7.9 percent in January, the highest it's been since April 1993. That tops December's 7.2 percent mark and represents a loss of 29,300 more jobs. About one-third were in manufacturing. The national unemployment rate now stands at a 16-year high of 7.6 percent.
The Illinois Department of Employment Security says 518,600 Illinoisans are out of work, the most since November of 1985. IDES Director Maureen O'Donnell says it's important to remain positive and to take advantage of services her agency provides.

To help job seekers improve their odds of success in the increasingly competitive employment market, global outplacement consultancy Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc., will suspend normal business operations on December 29 and 30 to take phone calls from anyone needing job-search advice. A Geneva startup is putting a newsy spin on help wanted ads.Job Search Television Network is presenting job listings in a broadcast news format on the belief that an anchor delivering a 60-second job description will leave a stronger impression with a job seeker than print. It’s aiming its sales pitch at companies seeking workers.
“What differentiates us (from other job sites) is that we have video,” said Roger Stanton, the network’s co-founder. “People remember pictures. People remember video.”
To find clients, Mr. Stanton turned to job listings and cold-called companies looking for workers. He persuaded nearly a dozen companies to get on board, among them McDonald’s Corp., Allstate Corp. and Evanston Northwestern Healthcare.
“What attracted us to this is that it fell into an area that didn’t replace anything like Monster.com or classified ads,” said Bill Luehrs, chief human resources officer for ENH. “It gives us the ability to get to the passive job-seeker through a media that we didn’t have before.”
Mr. Stanton’s three-year-old company recently inked a deal with Comcast Corp. to carry Job Search Television Network on its cable system for three hours a day. The network will debut June 30 on Comcast’s channel 102, which typically airs local programming. The show will air daily from 6 to 8 a.m. and from 9 to 10 p.m.
“We bought three hours (of air time) to start and we can buy more hours,” Mr. Stanton said. “We have enough content. Right now, the number of jobs out there far exceeds (our air time).”
