I shared this on the fb page for this blog. We see an article from Patch for the coming runoff in Ward 6 between Deborah Foster-Bonner and Ald. Roderick Sawyer. If you didn't get the change to find out more about Ms. Foster-Bonner before last month's election take your time and read about her before next month's run-off. And as always feel free to chime in on whether or not you think Chicago's 6th Ward is better off with a change in the Alderman's office or if the incumbent is doing the job in his current role.

Now he's running for mayor and he live William Daley gave a talk with the City Club of Chicago. This is roughly an hour video via Illinois Channel.
Question is could this native New Yorker gain your vote to become the next mayor of Chicago based on his speech to the City Club.

Feel free to read those 16 candidates' full responses. What are their positions on Tax Increment Financing districts? What would they use them for? TIFs has been a hot button issue for our city over the years.

AP: Candidates can start filing petitions Monday for Chicago's 2015 election

Candidate filing has started in Chicago for the 2014 municipal elections. If you haven't already check out Aldertrack's 2015 racing form to see who's running in your ward. As for us we still have our 2015 page ready to be updated for the candidates in wards 6, 9, and 21.
Petition filing for the Feb. 24 election started Monday morning at the Board of Election Commissioners for the city of Chicago. Races on the ballot include Chicago mayor, city treasurer and alderman in all of the city's 50 wards.
A Dec. 3 lottery is planned to determine top ballot positions for each contest. Candidates who are in line at or before 9 a.m. on Monday qualify for that lottery.
Petitions will be accepted through Nov. 24.

Ward 9 |
Another reason we're going to publish our 2015 page is because this coming Saturday, August 23, 2014 there will be a town hall featuring candidates for the 9th Ward. This event to be moderated by Rhymefest who ran for Alderman of the 20th Ward in 2011 will be held in the Crystal Room at the Legacy Chicago located at 11901 S. Loomis and the town hall doors would open at 9:30 and will be held from 10 AM to 12:30 PM.
The flyer below you may have seen posted on our FB page and our Instagram account. Here's hoping you attend and let us know if this event would sway your vote in the elections next February.

DNA Info: Morehouse College Graduate Seeks To Become Chicago's Youngest Alderman
![]() |
Corey Hardiman by DNA Info Wendell Hutson |
"I know people may think I am too young and inexperienced and that I won't be able to raise enough money to put fourth a good fight but that's what they said (in 2008) about President Barack Obama," Hardiman told DNAinfo Chicago Monday. "If he was able to do it then so can I."Here's an FB page if you wish to follow his campaign for 9th Ward Alderman.
The aspiring politician, who is a member of Salem Baptist Church, said he is scheduled to speak at 6 p.m. Monday to residents at the Altgeld Gardens public housing complex on the far South Side, which is part of the 9th Ward.
"I am going to speak to residents to let them know their opinion matters to me and I want to hear their concerns regardless if they are a registered voter or not," Hardiman said. "Ever since I graduated from high school I have always wanted to enter politics to make a difference in my community."
In 2010 after graduating from George Corliss High School as a Gates Millennium Scholar, where Beale is also an alumnus, Hardiman predicted at Mayor Richard M. Daley's annual interfaith breakfast at U.S. Cellular Field that he would run for mayor after finishing college.
"Well, maybe I was aiming too high at the time," Hardiman said. "But I certainly think it is a realistic goal."
Among the biggest issues facing the ward, Hardiman said, is public safety, education and economic development. While he praised Beale, 46, for "finally" getting a Walmart store in the ward, he said much more needs to be done on an economic level.
"If we could get President Obama's library to the far South Side that would create unlimited opportunities economically," Hardiman said. "Gone are the 'ma and pa' businesses in the 9th Ward and we need to bring back those small, family-owned businesses."

GCA Mayoral forum on CAN-TV - *this* WED and FRI morning!
An update to JP Paulus' post I didn't catch it on Monday morning. GCA offered an updated scheduled showing of the forum for 8:30 AM Wednesday on Channel 21 and of course one more on Friday morning at 10 AM on Channel 19. This is for those who are able to recieve CAN-TV on their cable services. If you have satellite you may not have CAN-TV.
Also it appears that GCA will offer a link to the 6th Ward Aldermanic forums to be shared whether on blogs such as this one or on social networking websites such as Facebook. Also from the e-mail...
If you want the information to get into touch with Bell e-mail the blog I can forward that information to you if you're not on the GCA distribution list.
An updated release for the update airings of the Aldermanic forum is here!

However, Shawn Bell, the cameraman is offering a link that you can use on your website and Facebook page that connects you to his server. How's that for sharing? I should pay the money, but I would imagine it's just easier to find a website such as YouTube, Blip, or even Vimeo to host the video. I admire the videographer for working with GCA to distribute his work but if he reads this post, I'm posting my ideas. Hopefully this won't corrupt the footage as the GCA e-mail claims that putting the forum on DVD would.
This will allow folks who do not have Comcast to see the entire forum via your website and Facebook page.
He is charging $20 for the link connection to offset his hosting the entire video on his server.
You can pay him in cash or a money order.

Sun-Times 6th Ward questionnaires
Needless to say, the Sun-Times has already endorsed Alderman Lyle, but lauded one of her challengers Cassandra Goodrum Burton. In any case perhaps you might be interested in the other candidates' questionnaires in this race for Alderman of the 6th
You can read other questionnaires for other municipal races here!
- Roderick Sawyer - This was a bare questionnaire unfortunately :(
- Ald. Fredrenna Lyle - Got the Sun-Times endorsement
- Brian Sleet - Haven't read this thoroughly, but Sleet has some good ideas
- Cassandra Goodrum Burton - Sun-Times liked her but not enough to endorse

Tribune candidate questionnaire for 6th Ward aldermanic candidates
Go here for races around the city. So far Roderick Sawyer, Ald. Lyle, and Cassandra Goodrum Burton had responded. The Tribune editorial board makes clear that no one has been endorsed so far.
Roderick Sawyer's questionnaire. This quote is about the Chatham Executive Building that has remained vacant even after renovations.
I will continue to check in future for responses from the other candidates for 6th Ward Alderman.

Roderick Sawyer's questionnaire. This quote is about the Chatham Executive Building that has remained vacant even after renovations.
We have a state-of-the art "green" building in our community owned by African Americans, yet it remains virtually empty primarily due to the surge in violence on 79th Street.Ald. Lyle's questionnaire. Her response to how to encourage employers to our city.
By providing an educated workforce, a culture that supports businesses and assisting new businesses in cutting through the regulatory maze.Cassandra Goodrum Burton's questionnaire. Ms. Burton has this quote about Chicago State University.
One underused resource in the ward is Chicago State University. I would like to see the University serve as an economic engine for the area much like UIC does for the west side.I would like to write more about their comments. It interesting to read their thoughts about how they think CPS should be administered whether continuing the status quo, switching to an elected school board, having a CEO with education experience, or who should appoint the CEO. Also interesting is how each would address the issue of crime and economic development.
I will continue to check in future for responses from the other candidates for 6th Ward Alderman.

Roderick Sawyer on PCC Community Network Forum
In this video Sawyer, candidate for 6th Ward Alderman in 2011, is talking more about issues affecting the whole city. He does talk a little about the religious institutions in our ward. In addition he talks about serving with the Chatham/Avalon Park Community Council, Park Manor Neighbors, and the LSC at McDade Classical School. Other than that not enough quotes on what is going on in our neighborhoods. Although I'm sure many people appreciate his thoughts on the issues facing the city as a whole.

Yet another candidate for 6th Ward Alderman, part 2
Ronald Sistrunk has a website and a Twitter account that I have found via Early & Often. Also to be added to the 2011 page. What I found interesting at his website is his reasons for wanting to be Alderman:
The issue of crime is certainly one we have covered during this past year. Especially with high profile shootings in our ward two of them involving police officers. Although 79th & Cottage Grove strikes me as a rough corner anyway, but can't verify what exactly goes on there.
Worlee has commented on the very unsafe streetscape, especially at night along 79th Street. He wants to see better lighting along that street. I would like to know more about why Sistrunk thinks 79th Street is the murder capital of this ward and that it's an open air drug market.
Also I believe Hirsch High School is outside of our ward. Not sure how much any Alderman who doesn't directly represent a school can affect that school. Even then that might require working with the neighboring Alderman.
Since education is an issue we do like to follow here at "The Sixth", he should focus his attention on the schools we do have in this ward. Whether or not they're problem schools as he may describe Hirsch. For example what would he do about Deneen Elementary which was the subject of a takeover this past winter? What would he do about a resurgent Harlan High School to make sure they continue to progress.
Some issues that might make him the darling of the Chicago media may well be the red light cameras and the parking meter issues. They have been the focus of our local media the last few years. And making sure the resources are distributed throughout the 6th is another important issue. Perhaps he can take on the issue of TIFs to ensure that.
Other than that, what do you think?
I want to be the next Alderman for the following reasons:OK, where do I begin? This bullet point list of issues are to be verified. We need a vision for economic development in this ward. How do we want to see our commercial thoroughfares to look in this ward? I'm referring specifically to 75th, 79th, and Cottage Grove for example.
- To get rid of those Over priced parking meters and the Denver boot in the 6th Ward
- 79th Street is Drug Heaven from State to Stony
- 79th Street is the Murder Capital of 6th Ward
- Seniors are afraid to leave their home
- Children can’t play in Cole Park because of Crime
- Average Citizens are afraid to allow their children outside to play for fear
- 6th Ward violence is out of control
- There is a lack of economics development, a lack of employment and a lack of a vision for the 6th Ward driving the crime
- There is a lack of fairness in the distribution of resources throughout the 6th ward
- Violence at Hirsh HS is out of control
- Crime prevails in the 6th Ward because the Current Alderman has turned a BLINDED eye to it (ex: open drug selling on 79th Cottage Gr. Sex for sale all up and down Cottage Gr,seems like a killing per day in the ward)
- A Lack of LEADERSHIP!
- Leaks is the only one with an on going employment program in the Ward
- Ban the Red Light Cameras from of the 6th Ward
- Why don’t we have a Wal-Mart because there is no VISION!!
The issue of crime is certainly one we have covered during this past year. Especially with high profile shootings in our ward two of them involving police officers. Although 79th & Cottage Grove strikes me as a rough corner anyway, but can't verify what exactly goes on there.

This flyer was found the Quence The Cafe on79th near St. Lawrence
I apologize for the poor quality of the photo. Perhpas someone can post a link to a better graphic.
Check our 2011 Election page for a current list of potential candidates. We in the 6th currently have 7 candidates, the same as the 46th ward on the North Side.

Outside of this storefront on 113 E. 95th Street.
The approximate location of this storefront you see above in Google Street View.
Check out the pictures below. Drove by one day and saw a storefront dominated by pictures of a person and other posters. Walked by earlier today and saw that this could be an eventual campaign HQ for Richard Wooten for Alderman. You can visit his website at http://www.chicago6thward.com. The middle poster he claims to live in Chatham has a church in Englewood, but has business interests in Grand Crossing and Park Manor. Hmmm sounds like a guy who wants to reach out to the various neighborhoods of the 6th.
Aside from this visible presence the storefront itself is gated up, but I look forward to them opening up shop. If anyone else running for Alderman next year has a campaign HQ, I look forward to you opening up shop as well. Let us know on our 2011 page!

6th ward aldermanic candidates for 2011?
Uptown Update has posted the latest possible aldermanic Candidate for the 46th ward, Don Nowotny. They are in fact keeping tabs on the growing list of candidates for Alderman (about 4 so far, with another 3 rumored to be considering it).
How about the 6th ward?
In 2003, things were so heated there was a runoff, where Willye White edged out Eugene David and Eli Washington (by 68 and 164 votes respecitively) to face Alderman Lyle (who received 41% of the vote) in a runoff. Alderman Lyle recieved approimately the same number of votes, but White received far less opposition votes, capturing only 44% of the vote.
Any contenders this year? Uptown Update is only posting those who have a website, and have officially declared.
We posted questions for ALL candidates interested in responding for the February 2010 election Only Kari Steele responded.
For the 2011 election, we will make a stronger effort to present candidates with a questionnaire which will include some questions helpful for our audience in getting to know the candidates. Expect it to be an expanded version similar to this questionnaire.
