From Block Club Chicago, Ald. Roderick Sawyer gives his thoughts on being forced into next month's runoff election for Ward 6 Alderman. He claims not to know much about his opponent Deborah Foster-Bonner. As we know he beat another incumbent Alderman of the 6th Ward in a runoff, however, do you all believe he can pull off a victory on April 2nd?

Also early voting in next month's runoff for some alderman, city treasurer, and mayor races began yesterday.

I shared this on the fb page for this blog. We see an article from Patch for the coming runoff in Ward 6 between Deborah Foster-Bonner and Ald. Roderick Sawyer. You might have seen this on Concerned Citizens of Chatham, as the count had continued from last week's election it appears that there will be a runoff in the 6th Ward between incumbent Roderick T. Sawyer and Deborah Foster Bonner.

I wanted to highlight what's interesting about the coming run-off next month between Toni Preckwinkle and Lori Lightfoot from yesterday's post by Rich Miller.

I think Preckwinkle’s biggest problem is that people who voted for everyone else in the first round did so at least partly because they couldn’t bring themselves to vote for the purported “front-runner” - and that would be 84 percent of those who voted. Few really know who Lori Lightfoot is, which as a commenter pointed out earlier today is most definitely a big help at this point in the campaign. It’s hers to lose right now because she’s 1) not Toni Preckwinkle; and 2) a blank slate.

 Preckwinkle has to firmly and quickly take Lightfoot down, gin up the aldermen with the warning that Lightfoot will take away their outside income and their ward prerogatives, hand out as much patronage as she can lay her hands on, get the church ladies on her side and otherwise rehabilitate her own image (although the latest poll found that, despite it all, she still has a 53-37 fav/unfav rating). All in four short weeks.

Whew.

Not to mention that yet another self-inflicted wound could prove politically fatal. She’d also better hope that nothing happens with the federal case against Ald. Ed Burke in the next few weeks.

Who might eke out the win for the mayor's office in April.

I didn't follow returns blow-by-blow but have seen on twitter and elsewhere what was happening in yesterday's municipal elections. So the mayoral race was interesting though it's disheartening to learn in an open mayoral race the turnout was very low.

Either way Chicago will make history to elect either Lori Lightfoot or Toni Preckwinkle as the first Black woman mayor of Chicago. And we can say either of those ladies will be second woman mayor behind the late Jane Byrne.

ABC7: Emanuel, Garcia participate in South Side forum

The mayor and his run-off opponent Chuy Garcia squared off at a forum at our local Chicago State University this evening. At first as per a status from 17th Ward Alderman-elect David Moore we learned that Emanuel had planned to blow this event off. Then later decided he will indeed participate in the CSU forum.

WBEZ: Chicago mayor's race reveals deep divide in democratic party

Not too long ago we shared an article about the divide amongst Black voters with regards to the mayoral runoff next month between Mayor Emanuel and Commissioner Chuy Garcia. This time WBEZ looks at the divide amongst Democrats.

While recent polling suggests that the mayor is leading in this election, who else feels this could be a close election come April 7th?

Mayor Emanuel on Chicago Tonight

[VIDEO] On Thursday, Mayor Rahm Emanuel appeared on Chicago Tonight to discuss being in a mayoral runoff. Especially as noted this is the first mayor runoff since the city started with non-partisan mayoral elections in 1999.

Hinz: Is your ward headed for an aldermanic runoff?

Greg Hinz at Crain's notes that the 21st ward isn't certain to have a run-off: "the 21st, where incumbent Howard Brookins has been trailing but lately has shown signs of reviving".

Of course as we've been following this election while Ald. Brookins has a number of challengers, no one seems to have broken out of the pack so to speak. And the elections for city offices is next Tuesday, time will tell.

Are there any surprises Hinz should know about as far as potential run-offs?

Reminder - 1 day left to register to vote

Even though we just posted about registering to vote, Uptown Update reminded us that we have one more day left to register voters for the runoff election.

The 12-day window to register to vote or change your registration is about to slam shut. If you're already registered to vote, no worries. But if you're not, and you want to vote in the aldermanic run-off on April 5th, you need to register by Tuesday.

You can mail in a form (just make sure it's postmarked by 3/8), you can go to any Secretary of State's Office where drivers licenses are issued, or you can go to the Board of Elections downtown. Click on the button on the right sidebar for details.

Even if you've registered, please sure your friends, family and neighbors have done so as well.
