Body found in trash can on west 95th Street last week!

On our FB page and on Concerned Citizens of Chatham have seen a notice from Ald. Howard Brookins with regards to a murder victim. The body of a woman was found in a trash can on west 95th Street last Monday unfortunately the woman herself still hasn't been identified.

I thought it was important to find an article about this grisly story:

Investigators will now await toxicological results and additional details of a death investigation following an autopsy for a woman found dead inside a trash bin on the city’s South Side.

City trash collectors discovered the woman’s body as they emptied the bin into a truck in an alley in the 500 block of West 95th Street in the Brainerd neighborhood just before 11:30 a.m. Monday, police said.

It was unclear how long the woman’s body had been in the trash can, but a Chicago police spokeswoman said it the woman’s body had no obvious signs of trauma.

Well so far most of the other stories I found out there about this, are very short and not a lot of information as of now! Hopefully we will see further updates to this as far as the late woman's identity and hopefully what happened to her.

Trial of the murder of Demario Bailey begins

The tragic murder of Demario Bailey began yesterday as his twin brother took the stand. The full story is in today's Chicago Tribune.

We will post more as information becomes available, including a photo of the memorial van that you may have seen along 76th street, btween King And State.

How bad is the reporting for the South Side

I noticed a couple of major errors in this ABC channel 7 news story on the slaying of a community leader.  I am just wondering if other people have noticed these type of inaccuracies in stories on the south side.

Saturday, July 15, 2017 11:27PMCHICAGO (WLS) --A 58-year-old community activist was fatally shot Saturday afternoon across the street from the nonprofit he ran in Chicago's Far South Side.

William "Willie" Cooper was principal officer of Lilydale Outreach Workers for a Better Community, a nonprofit that provides jobs to South Side teens.

"People are so cold-hearted. How could you take somebody's life? He helped everybody. I just don't understand," said Patricia Carter, the victim's niece.

The shooting occurred at about 4:15 p.m. in the 1100-block of West 95th Street. His nonprofit is nearby on 95th Street near the Dan Ryan Expressway.

Cooper was walking when he was hit in the mouth and back by someone in a dark-colored vehicle driving by. No one was in custody late Saturday.

It was immediately unclear if others were on the street, but the shooting occurred near a liquor store that has been the scene of several shootings in recent years.

"Will is preventing violence. Trying to find jobs for ex-offenders, working in this community. I almost want to name him the mayor of 95th Street," said Bamani Obadele, a friend.

Cooper died at the scene. An AR-15 was used in the shooting.

"It's scary when you hear that an assault weapon is used. It's scary when you hear and I'm not saying how many markers, but when you show up and there are 35 shell casings on the street, that's scary," Dawn Valenti, a crisis responder.

Family and friends came to the scene of the shooting, sharing the same story of a man dedicated to his community and spending his life helping others get a leg up.

"Since my dad passed away he's been a man in the house, making sure that me and my mom was ok," said Carter, his niece.

"I met him when I was a little boy and all through time there are so many stories of him doing good in the community. Him paying for funerals for other people, people to go to school. Whatever anybody needed. Whatever anybody needed," said Donovan Price, of Praise Chicago.

The victim's nonprofit is much close to 100 W 95th (near the Dan Ryan).

Charges filed in death of Cook County judge in West Chesterfield

So...not random, as in targeted.

And targeted why? Judges aren't usually notoriously rich.

So from the Tribune article 2nd City Cop linked from:

At a news conference Wednesday evening at police headquarters, Chief of Detectives Melissa Staples answered few questions, emphasizing that the investigation remained "open and ongoing" and that more details would come out in court Thursday. But she did call the attack on Associate Judge Raymond Myles and his girlfriend "a targeted robbery." However, Staples wouldn't say whether it was the judge or his girlfriend who was the target of the robbery.

According to the Cook County state's attorney's office, Joshua T. Smith, 37, was charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder, aggravated battery with a firearm and armed robbery.
...
Police would not identify Smith's role in the attempted armed robbery, but multiple law enforcement sources told the Chicago Tribune that he acted as the alleged getaway driver.

The worst part about find out about this story is that I first found out about it on a widely-read right wing blog: Instapundit.

If you don't want to go to that site, there's Jack Leyhane's For What it's Worth blog. The blog typically follows the Cook County judicial politics.

According to an article from the Chicago Tribune, the fatal shooting occurred on the 9400 block of South Forrest and is said to be a suspected attempted robbery.

A 14-year-old girl has been missing since Monday from the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood on the South Side.

Samaria Banks was last seen 10:30 p.m. Monday, according to a missing person alert from Chicago Police. Her family told police that this is the first time she has been missing and that she frequents the area around the 200 block of East 69th Street.

  

She is described as a black girl with black hair and brown eyes, standing 5-foot-5 and weighing 135 pounds.

Anyone with information about Banks’ whereabouts should call the Area Central Special Victims Unit at (312) 747-8380.

UPDATE: Man Killed After Being Shot In Head In Chatham

Police were searching for an attacker who fatally shot a man in a Burnside neighborhood home just before noon today, authorities said.

The man shot in the head in the home in the 600 block of East 87th Place was believed to be about 20 years, said Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Robert Perez.

The man, 21-year-old Rakim Douman, was dead on the scene, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.A family member called police to say a male relative had been shot about noon today in the home, Perez said.

Police were searching for an attacker, described as a young man wearing a red hat and a dark blue jacket, in the shooting, Perez said.

Fire Department paramedics responded to the scene, but no transports were made, said Chicago Fire Department spokesman Will Knight.

A man was killed when he was shot in the head in a home in the South Side Chatham neighborhood Thursday afternoon.

The shooting occurred just after noon inside a residence in the 600 block of East 87th Place, according to police News Affairs Officer Robert Perez. A man suffered a gunshot wound to the head and was dead on the scene, he said.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office said the victim was 21, but had no additional details as of about 2:30 p.m.

Area South detectives are investigating.

The 29-year-old man was found shot in the head in the 8800 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue about 9 p.m., police News Affairs Officer Ron Gaines said.

Gaines did not know whether he was found inside his home or outside.

He was identified as Robert Munn and was pronounced dead at Advocate Christ Hospital at 9:55 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

No one is in custody as Area South detectives continue to investigate.

Still a sore wound and this young victim is still not forgotten. In fact on two occasion we share articles that mentioned her name one asking about a mural in Harris' honor and another about a crackdown on vacant lots. Here's a piece of the story from the past weekend:

The balloons that swirled up into the blue sky on Saturday were a familiar sight for Englewood residents. This year marks the 14th time friends and family of 11-year-old murder victim Ryan Harris have met at her namesake park to remember a life cut short.

On July 28, 1998, the lifeless girl was found battered and sexually assaulted in an isolated Englewood backyard a day after she’d been reported missing. The grisly murder made national headlines when two boys — ages 7 and 8 — were charged with the crime, then later cleared.

DNA evidence later linked Floyd Durr, of the South Side, to the crime and he eventually pleaded guilty and was sentenced to life in prison.

For Sabrina Harris, the girl’s mother, the details are still fresh.

But the anniversary of the event is about more than Ryan’s life, she said. It’s about the grief communities are consumed with from ongoing street violence. With family and friends clad in T-shirts featuring Ryan’s photo, Sabrina Ryan took the microphone to thank the crowd for coming out to remember her daughter. But tears welled: “I’m so overwhelmed with a lot of the shootings that are happening in our community. And all these deaths, they need to stop,” she said.

An update to a recent story posted on Friday!

Michael T. Jones, 30, was charged with one count of first-degree murder, police said. He was being held in the Cook County Jail without bond awaiting a May 9 court date, according to the Cook County Sheriff’s office’s website.

Police officers saw Jones shooting at a man just before 11 p.m. Wednesday in the 700 block of East 87th Place and arrested him after a short foot chase, police said.

Jones is accused of shooting James Reddick, 58, near his home on the same block. Reddick was dead on the scene with a gunshot wound to the head, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

A source said the shooting was not random.

3 shot dead on South Side

A woman and two men were killed this evening in a shooting near a restaurant and bakery in the Chatham neighborhood on the city's South Side, officials said.

The shooting happened about 5 p.m. on the 8700 block of South King Drive, said Police News Affairs Officer Dan O'Brien.

A man and a woman died at the scene. Another man was wounded and taken in serious-to-critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he died later, according to police and Fire Media.

As of 6 p.m., no one was in custody for the shooting and there was no vehicle description available, O'Brien said.

The three victims, all thought to be in their 20s, were sitting in a car in a parking lot outside a Church's Chicken and a bakery, authorities said.

The woman and one of the men were found dead following the shooting, which occurred in a lot used by a Church’s Chicken restaurant and A Piece of Cake, a long-time local bakery.

The other man was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in critical condition, where he died about 7:05 p.m., officials said. None of the victims was identified by authorities, but all were believed to be in their 20s.

A bakery worker said the woman had picked up a cake at the shop just before the shooting broke out.

“It happened right outside,” said the worker, who declined to give her name but said the block where the business sits is usually peaceful.

Inmate questioned in murder of Officer Michael Bailey

Tribune:

A 24-year-old prison inmate is being questioned in the 2010 slaying of Chicago police Officer Michael Bailey, sources told the Tribune.

The man was sent to prison downstate after his arrest last September on vehicular hijacking and weapons charges. At that time, he had been on parole following a 2009 conviction for aggravated battery to a peace officer and a 2008 drug conviction.

The man has not been charged in the officer's killing, and no one was officially calling him a suspect.

Bailey, 62, was shot early on the morning of July 18 last year while cleaning his new Buick — a retirement gift to himself — outside his home in the 7400 block of South Evans Avenue in the South Side's Park Manor neighborhood, police said.

It was duly noted and has been that Officer Bailey was still in uniform when he was attacked outside of his home.

Update on shooting of an off-duty police officer

 

WGN was at the scene of the crime where Officer Thomas Wortham was murdered in an robbery attempt. And we know more about one of the suspects, the one who was killed by Wortham's ex-police officer father.

The dead suspect has been identified as 20-year old Brian Floyd. The wounded suspect is in critical condition at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

Police say they are looking for two other suspects who fled in a Nissan Maxima north on the Dan Ryan Expressway. Officers later found the car abandoned miles away from the scene, but the suspects are still at large.

Bond denied for man charged in fatal shooting of 20-month old

Sun-Times:

A 21-year-old Burnside man has been charged in the fatal shooting of a 20-month old girl who was struck by gunfire believed to be intended for her father.

Danzeal Finley, of the 700 block of East 92nd Street, was charged shortly after midnight Saturday with one count of first-degree murder in the death of

Cynia was shot in the head as she sat with her two young sisters in the back of her parents’ car Wednesday night in the Chatham neighborhood. She later died at the University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital.

Police said they think Cynia's death was gang-related and that her father, Jerome Hendricks, was the intended target.

“He’s going to have to live with that for the rest of his life,” Police Supt. Jody Weis said of Hendricks at an afternoon press conference.

Hendricks is a Gangster Disciples member and Finley is a rival Black P Stone member, police sources said.

All he did was shoot an innocent child who would have had NO CLUE about whatever her father was involved with. At least we know that this individual did the right thing and turned himself in as indicated in one update here!

Man found shot to death after vehicle crashes into Popeyes

Southtown:

Curtis Settles, 21, was inside a car at a gas station on the east side King Drive near 95th Street when he was shot in the chest, a Gresham District police lieutenant said.

After he was shot he drove across the street, where he plowed into the front door of a Popeye's fast-food restaurant. Popeye's was closed.

When police arrived, the man was found shot outside of the car and he has died, the lieutenant said.

Settles, of the 21100 block of Kildare Avenue [Matteson, IL], was dead on the scene at 400 E. 95th St., the Cook County medical examiner's office said. He suffered a gunshot wound.

The building did not sustain severe damage.

Police officer Ronald Gaines said no one else was inside the car and no other injuries were reported.

Ah, just about every stereotype is covered by this story.

Hmmm, this story has nothing to do with stereotypes. A man is dead and they bring up stereotypes!

Popeyes near 400 E 95th is NOT the Roseland Community! I guess the news didn't want to state that Popeyes is across the street from Chicago State University.

Well ummm technically 400 E. 95th is within the Roseland community area, but another reader addresses that and has other comments as well:

On the official maps the area south of the train tracks is Roseland, while north is Chatham. So it was in Roseland. (East of King Drive would be Burnside.) On other maps the area is West Chesterfield.

I walked past there this morning and didn't even notice anything unusual. Frighteningly enough, we are getting accustomed to this violence.

A few weeks ago a 17 year old was shot at 91st Place and King Drive and pulled into the BP station across the street from Popeyes. Rumor has it that the bullet wasn't even intended for him.

Don't forget that Mom, Grandma, or Auntie are providing room and board for these killers. They need to put them out.

Well how about we start some comments about this violence here. Why wait for that ward meeting next month? We should start talking publicly now about what we want to do about it!

Man found fatally stabbed in Chatham

Chicago Breaking News:

A 54-year-old man was pronounced dead this morning after he was found stabbed in the Chatham neighborhood, officials said.

Willie Anderson, of the 9400 block of South Michigan Avenue, was pronounced dead at 8 a.m. at Jackson Park Hospital and Medical Center, according to a spokesman with the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Police responded to a call at 7:09 a.m. to the 600 block of East 79th Street where they found Anderson on the sidewalk with multiple stab wounds, said News Affairs Officer Daniel O'Brien.

Man shot, then killed by hit-run vehicle

The beginning of the story...

Chicago police Sunday were continuing their search for the person who shot a convicted sex offender and struck him with a vehicle near a lounge in the city's Chatham neighborhood.

An autopsy Sunday showed that the man -- identified as Howard Hodges, 34 -- died from injuries caused by the vehicle, according to a spokesman for the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Two other men also were shot in the incident, which happened near 83rd Street and Vincennes Avenue. Those victims did not suffer life-threatening injuries, police said.

A 53-year-old man was fatally shot Thursday afternoon in the Burnside neighborhood on Chicago's South Side.The shooting occurred about 3 p.m. in the 800 block of East 93rd Street, police Officer Laura Kubiak said. The victim, Calvin Porter, was standing on the sidewalk near his vehicle when two men approached him from behind and one of them opened fire, she said. Porter, of the 800 block of East Drexel Square, was shot in the head and back. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead about 3:35 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.Porter was a known member of the Gangster Disciples street gang and had a history of violent offenses going back 25 years, including convictions for murder, aggravated battery and home invasion, court records show.

No one was in custody and a motive for the shooting was unknown Friday, according to Kubiak. Calumet Area detectives were investigating.Jason Meisner and Jeremy Gorner, Tribune reporters
