Ward Remap: The People's Map

[VIDEO] I'm a few days late however an independent group the Chicago Advisory Redistricting Commission created a map for consideration by the Chicago City Council. This report from WGN discusses this proposed map.

A few things to consider and it wasn't much different from the debate in 2011-2012. The Latino community wanted more representation and this map would create a ward designed to elect an Asian-American to the City Council. For that Asian-American they would likely be elected in a ward centered around the Chinatown community.

With this said, I see that Englewood could be one ward which is what R.A.G.E. has often advocated for. How many wards will be drawn to elect Black Aldermen (or is it Alderperson or Alderwomen). The map is a bit different than I'm sure many of us are used to and for the city council itself I'm sure they will debate among themselves how their map for the next 10 years.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot campaign in 2019 for an independent commission to draw a ward map. She welcomes this map reportedly though she's a long way from supporting the map you will see below the People's Map.

Also noted in this report by Tahman Bradley the political reporter for WGN and you might know from the last remap led by Rahm Emanuel. 41 Aldermen must vote in favor of this map, however, if more than 10 Alderman reject this map and propose another this will trigger a special election where Chicago voters will choose a ward map.

I also wanted to add that the Mayor had also supported an elected school board then opposed proposals for an elected school board when it was proposed in Springfield and we ultimately got an elected school board whether or not she actually wanted one. Will she treat a city ward map much different we shall see?

Chicago Tonight: Efforts to Draw New Chicago Ward Map Getting Started

 

[VIDEO] If you believe Ald. Roberto Maldonaldo the priority of the city council's Latino Caucus is to draw a map that gives the Latino community better representation. Also discussions have already started among members of the City Council to start the process and that the city is also looking to make a purchase of map making software for the city's "maproom". Maldonaldo is also hoping that there won't be the same type of drama that took place during this time a decade ago with previous Mayor Rahm Emanuel. I hope so as well.

Also noted here is an independent commision the Chicago Advisory Redistricting Committee which is working on their own proposal for a new ward map.

WBEZ: 50 Wards in 50 Weekdays

I look forward to what they have in the cooker for the 6th Ward in the meanwhile you can check the wards they have written about currently. One ward of interest is the 24th Ward where they interview a woman who takes issue with "section 8" renters:

What is not so cool, according to [Loretta Scott], is a trend developing in her North Lawndale neighborhood.

“What I like about my neighborhood is, most of the people are homeowners, and they take very good care of their homes,” Scott says. But “we have new neighbors from Section 8 [housing vouchers] and what I don’t like about it is that they’re not taking care of the property that they’re renting. And it’s making the people who have been living there for a while kind of upset.”

This causes tension. Old-timers complaining to each other about the newcomers. Quietly complaining.

“We don’t really know them and we don’t know how to communicate with them,” she says.

Scott wants the city to put more regulations on landlords – or at least enforce current rules – to make sure they keep up with yard work. Overflowing trash cans are also a problem.

I'll be sure to keep checking to see who they interview in the 6th Ward and the other nearby wards!

Suggested Ward Map revealed by Black Caucus

Fomer 6th Ward Alderman Fredrenna Lyle posted on her Facebook page a link to Maze Jackson's blog which announced the news of the Chicago Aldermanic Black Caucus' proposed ward re-map.

What is noted is that 1 black ward was lost in the process.

A quick reading of the map showed some interesting things:

• The 6th Ward (which this blog covers) now has up to 5 wards with influence in the Chatham community area
• Englewood will be represented by "only" 5 wards (Thanks to RAGE for the heads up)
• Also, in regads to Englewood, more of it would be represented by the 6th ward
• Northeast side wards such as the 46th, 48th, 49th & 50th retain as only one community area as their main base (Uptown, Edgewater, Rogers Park and West Ridge, respectively).
