Thousands of CPS Students Start Classes Today

CPR:
Today is the first day of school at 41 elementary schools in Chicago. More than half are new to the year-round school system.

Cicely Carey has two daughters who attend Earle Elementary. She’s fine with them starting school early. So is her friend Latishia Henry.

CAREY: You know I really like it. Maybe they’ll get better help. Learn more. Summer won’t interrupt. Exactly...

CPS officials did an informational blitz about the new school start date.

Test scores are not yet available to compare whether students at year-round schools do better than their peers. Officials do say that attendance stays steady for students on this type of academic calendar. The year-round decision is made by local schools, not the central office.
