Authorities say eight Illinois credit unions are stepping up to plug college funding gaps wrought by the credit crunch for student tuition aid.This program would offer $20,000 in Stafford loans for Illinois college students.
Governor Rod Blagojevich says the credit unions are investing $100 million worth of securities to fund new Stafford loans for Illinois students.
Stafford loans have a 6.8% interest rate and are available to students without a credit check. Blagojevich says the loans will be available to all state college students seeking aid.
