New CTA board member Sheila Nix said if the vote on a proposed fare increase were held today, she'd go against it.
"At first glance, yes, I think I would vote against it," said Nix, a former deputy governor under Governor Blagojevich. Blagojevich, a critic of the CTA's management, recently placed Nix on the transit agency board.
Nix noted that it was just this past January that the CTA was warning it needed new state money to avert a "doomsday," under which fares would go up and service would be cut.
"It seems to me you're raising credibility questions when less than 10 months later, you're asking for a fare increase right after people got a sales tax increase," Nix said today after a board meeting.
The CTA said it needs to increase fares--by as much as 50 cents for a ride on the L--because of higher fuel costs, a shortfall in the real estate transfer tax and the necessity of providing free rides to seniors and the low-income disabled. Nix helped create the senior free ride program.
