34th Ward vs. 6th Ward

An interesting e-mail from The Observer...
Ald. Carrie Austin, (34th Ward) was able to bring new retail development to her ward. She had the good sense to oppose the big-box ordinance and her constituents now have a stunning outdoor mall that includes Target (with a grocery), Pet Co., Marshall’s, Panda Express and a host of other stores. Take a look. It right off I-57 (111th St. exit and keep driving to about 119th). I have to say that I was jealous that the complex wasn’t in the 6th Ward. We got our butts kicked on securing hundreds of jobs in the 6th Ward and being able to shop in a wide variety of nice stores.
I was thinking about the Chatham shopping center on 87th and Cottage Grove. That was some good land that got redeveloped in the last decade after some inactivity. That area has a Target, Walgreen's amongst some major shops. I suppose the gist of this might be the fact that there's a lot of land with that former Libby's complex off of I-57.

I know one place in the ward that could be worth building on. The area where the old Kennedy-King now sits vacant looking for activity. There should be some development up that way.

Either way there isn't a lot of land to play with here.
