Preckwinkle poised to challenge Stroger

Laura Washington:
Like her most famous constituent, President Obama, 4th Ward Ald. Toni Preckwinkle is an enigma in Chicago politics.

Preckwinkle met with me at the restaurant 312 in the Loop last Wednesday to explain why she has decided to run for Cook County Board president. You won't see her sporting the pearls, tailored suits or Chanel favored by some female pols. Arriving off the No. 6 Jeffery bus, she wore a sensible green blazer, '70s-style oval wire frames and her trademark salt-and-pepper curly 'fro.

She plucked a no-nonsense breakfast out of the cholesterol-laden menu: oatmeal topped with multicolored raisins, hot tea. Gotta love that, the Fat Nag says.

"People have a right to expect both competence and compassion in their county government," Preckwinkle exclaimed, in a backhanded jab at County Board President Todd Stroger. Anyone who's breathing knows the Stroger regime offers neither. Patronage, loyalty and incompetence are the hallmarks of his administration.
Does a four-term alderman have the management experience to oversee a $3 billion operation?

"Leadership is not being the one person in the room that knows everything, but the person who finds good people and gives them the latitude to do the job."

Shades of Daley and Obama?
