Two items from Chicago Public Radio

First we should talk about Roland Burris. He says he's in debt:
Before he was even sworn in, newly minted Senator Roland Burris had already filed paperwork allowing him to start fund-raising for the 2010 election. But he says that's doesn't necessarily mean he wants to run for the office when his term expires.

BURRIS: No that means I am in debt. I have legal bills, to the tune of $400,000

Burris said he had to pay for his staff out of his pocket while battling to be seated in the Senate, after his controversial appointment by then-Governor Rod Blagojevich.
Earlier this week he took some flack because his office wasn't responding to constituents. His answer...
The senator also dismissed accusations that he’s dodging constituents’ phone calls. Burris says it was tough for folks to reach him because phone lines weren’t set up in his office until just recently, and since then his staff has been flooded with calls from across the country.
The next story is about that 14 year old kid who got caught posing as a Chicago Police officer. Superintendent Weis was grilled on that:
Aldermen on the city's Police and Fire Committee didn't so much grill Weis. It was more of a sauteeing. All seemed to agree this was an embarassing incident that could've been worse. Here's Alderman Ed Smith talking to Weis.

SMITH: What if this had been a terrorist? Can you have imagined what could've happened? WEIS: Absolutely. This could've been a horrific event. And that's why we're taking this matter very seriously. You know, there's been some people who've found this to be the butt of late night jokes. In reality, we dodged a bullet on this one.
One would have to wonder how this young man was able to fool Chicago Police Officers. I'm not going to say anything negative about except to say that this kid must have been very convincing. At least Weis is on the case about what happened and then how not to let it happen again. Even to consult with the US Secret Service to increase security.
