Police, CPS want kids to text cops with tips about crimes

Sun-Times:
With the tally of slain Chicago Public Schools students at 32 this school year -- and with about two months left before the summer break -- police and school officials Monday unveiled several steps to keep kids safe.

Police Supt. Jody Weis and schools CEO Ron Huberman said they will try to renew interest in the moribund Text to Tip program, unveiled in September in 10 high schools to allow students to send anonymous text messages to police about crimes. Only 70 messages were received last year and none helped solve crimes, officials said. Some were hoaxes.

Huberman said officials will better publicize the program, which will now be citywide.
Doesn't seem like a bad idea, but there has to be results especially if there have been hoaxes and none of the tips helped to solve any crimes.
