Burris commends Batavia pirate-attack survivor

Beacon News:
Sen. Roland W. Burris recognized Batavia resident Thomas Urbik Tuesday for his bravery during an attack by pirates off the Somali coast last month.

The Illinois Democrat praised Urbik at a hearing of the Senate Armed Services Committee on the threat international piracy poses to global security.

Urbik, a 26-year-old marine engineer, was aboard an American ship, the Liberty Sun, carrying food to Africa when it was attacked by Somali pirates on April 14.

Urbik took cover in the ship's engine room, where he proceeded to e-mail his family messages, updating them on the situation posed by pirates to the 20-person crew.

"I commend my fellow Illinoisan, Thomas Urbik for his calm bravery in the face of extreme danger," said Burris. "Piracy continues to be a serious problem for our global economy, the shipping industry, and especially our sailors on the high seas."
We can't contiune to talk about Roland Burris without some another headlin of interest!
