Chicago State OKs contract for new leader

Tribune:
Chicago State University's new president will make less than his predecessor, who retired in January following controversy over her spending practices and leadership.

University trustees today unanimously approved a 5-year contract this morning for incoming president Wayne Watson, a contract that will pay him just over $229,000 a year.

Former President Elnora Daniel, who announced her retirement in January 2008 after her spending practices and leadership came under fire, was paid $241,025 annually.

Watson, the outgoing chancellor of the City Colleges of Chicago, faces a tough task in turning around the troubled South Side university. Only 16 percent of its full-time freshmen graduate in six years and only 4 percent after four years.

There are 6,800 Chicago State students, down about 20 percent from a decade ago despite more high school graduates enrolling in college than ever before.
