Chicago 2016 to walk fine line before IOC

Crain's:
Pat Ryan and Mayor Richard M. Daley will make a delicate pitch to International Olympic Committee members in Lausanne, Switzerland, trying to wow them while reassuring them that Chicago’s not promising more than it can deliver.

Chicago and the other finalists — Tokyo, Madrid and Rio de Janeiro — each will address IOC members at their board meeting Wednesday.

It’s a chance to preview the bids before most of the 108 IOC members see the final presentation and vote on a 2016 host city Oct. 2 in Copenhagen, Denmark. Previous bids were given only one shot at addressing IOC members, on the day of the vote.

That’s not all that’s changed since London was awarded the 2012 Summer Games. The IOC wants a grand event. But given how Vancouver’s and London’s dreams have run headlong into ugly economic reality, the IOC might want to curb its appetite for an extravagant games.
